Looking ahead to next year

I was sitting in church yesterday bored out of my mind and was thinking who wont be back next year, what our biggest needs are, who I think will start, who will come off the bench and redshirt. Here is my way too early prediction for next year.

To me our biggest issues going into next year are point guard play, depth at the 4 and 5, and rebounding.
Either Cody John or Mckay Cannon need to step up and take control of the PG position. Our Freshman coming in might be able to take over from day one. Jordan Dallas seems like a good kid, but he just doesn't have the talent to be effective. He has been here 2 years and didn't impress me this year. Maybe give him one more year. I hope I'm wrong on him, but our 2 incoming Freshman on film already look better.

2017 projected starters

PG Cannon JR I think he will win the job back.
SG Harding SO Just got better all year. Looked awesome in Reno. Add 10 lbs of muscle and look out.
SF Richardson SR Would love him to blow up his sr year.
PF Chapman JR I hope he is as good as I think he will be.
C Braxton JR Would love him to average a double double. Has so much potential

First 3 off the bench.
Guard John JR I like that he is a combo guard. I think he is better suited to come off bench.
Wing Baker SR. Would love him playing more at the 3, but is such a versatile guy.
Post Kozak FR. Here is my bold prediction. I think he is going to be really good. haha.

Redshirting?????????????? I think Vialen will redshirt. Other than that, I wouldn't have a clue.
I don't think Darling and Stavrev will be back next year. That puts us at 13 if I'm right.

Agreed. I hope two years from now I'm not wishing what could have been with Braxton like I do with Hill. I really thought Hill would have ended up being so much more than he has been. Talk about what seemed like and still seems like so much more potential.

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I thought Hill improved immensely from when he first got here until now. I wasn't expecting the next Karl Malone or nothing but just look at his individual improvement and I thought he turned out to be a hell of a lot better than I ever thought he would be.
He worked his ass off
And right now there is nobody at WSU I would rather have on the foul line except maybe Harding.
Maybe I am blind or missing something. :twocents:

Hill did improve and I never said I wasn't glad to have him here or that he wasn't a talent, I just thought I saw more in him than he became, much more. I agree with the FTs, and there was a time or two in reNO where JS was put on the line and I was stunned that either Harding or Hill was not.

I would like to see our body language and team chemistry improve a little bit. Senglin played well for us, but I have always felt like he was a me first type guy. I watched this press conference from Geno A. the Ucoon ladies coach and thought there are some princples here that would really help our team. One of the great features of Randy's first team at Weber was how team first everyone was. Yes they all knew that Patton was the leader but everyone was happy for each other and did the blue collar things to win as a team. I do think the tail has started to wag the dog a little in the last few seasons and I hope we can get a little more of the team concept back.

Around the country everybody tries to peak at tournament time. In 15/16 we came close to that. This past year we peaked in late January, early February. That is not what you want to do. It may partly be due to our lack of depth, mostly in the post. My point is that we will need to do things better next year, or we could have similar results.

What can we do to mitigate petering out in the last month of the season?

We could not load so much on them at the beginning of the season. We could play more guys in the rotation, at least through mid January. We could keep them mentally sharp by adding little things, that are new, throughout the season. This last thing is something Ron A. did and I think it really helped. It helped get the guys minds off of little problems by making them focus on something other than what they have been doing wrong. The other thing it did for us was to not allow teams to be totally prepared for us. It's the way that Ron was able to beat North Carolina and Michigan State. They had no idea what hit them. However, it is also the reason that we always played worse in the second game. There are tradeoffs. Also, if you keep it simple in the beginning, you perform better in the beginning.

I don't know that any of those things will happen. They are just ideas and observations. :coffee:

I agree. I would say hill was our best player some games. I think when he stopped shooting outside the ark it helped him focus on his inside game and made him a better player. He wasnt the biggest on D which may of hurt him at times but his leaping ability made it so he got rebounds and had some fantastic blocks. If i had to choose Hill or Senglin, id take Hill. But thats just me
