Lots of Questions

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's Purple and White scrimmage and I hope that some of the many questions I have will start to be answered (realizing that this is only an intra-squad scrimmage).
1. How good are Braxton and Jefferson? I've heard lots of good things about both. Interested to see them on the court.
2. Will Jordan Dallas be someone who will be able to contribute this year or is he a work in progress?
3. How good a shooter is Stavrev?
4. Which of the 3 new guards (Baker, Cannon, or John) is most likely to see playing time?

And I guess most generally, after Bolomboy, Senglin, Gittens, and Hill, who are the next 4 who will complete what I expect will be an 8 man rotation again this year? Are Braxton and Jefferson definitely in that group? If so, then who are the final 2?

I would expect Richardson to be there.

I am far from an expert, but in the practice I went to and watched it seemed like they were really feeding Cannon the ball a lot.

I think that John and Stavrev might redshirt this year. Just a guess

My mistake. Can't believe I overlooked Richardson. So that means if Braxton and Jefferson are in the mix, that's 7. So who will #8 be?

Your questions can not be answered for a while yet. The coaches may have an idea, but they are not even certain yet. By mid November we may know who will red shirt. The rotation will likely start out at 11. Where it goes from there will be determined on productivity on both sides of the ball. The casual observer might think that it is a matter of who the coaches like, or some kind of a hunch. That is absolutely not true. They keep stats on everything, in games and practices. Players really do earn their time on the court. Red shirt decisions are not taken lightly. A player with great potential for growth and improvement is, often, more likely to red shirt than one with little. :coffee:

Those are great questions...

Usually by this point in the season, I have had the chance to watch the Cats practice at least once, but this year, I just haven't had the chance. From what I have heard, is that the team has great chemistry and leadership. I've heard good things about each of the new guys and I wouldn't doubt it if nobody ended up red shirting. Yet, I feel that isn't going to be the case. Someone will end up red shirting this season. Due to a summer injury, Juwan Williams might be a great candidate for a red shirt. Somewhat similar to what occurred with Jeremiah Jefferson. He needed a red shirt to catch up after his untimely injury his senior season. Also, I've heard that since coming out this summer, Jordan Dallas went from 220 to 205, but that the weight guys now have a better weight foundation for Dallas to put on muscle. I personally feel that it would be best for Jordan Dallas to red shirt. He has such talent, potential, and ability and with a stronger frame he will be able to develop better. A red shirt really would be advantageous for Dallas.

As for the rotation...I know I say this every year, but I think Rahe will use more of his bench this season. We definitely have more depth that in years past, but that doesn't necessarily translate into wins. I think leaderships, toughness, and chemistry are essential aspects behind a teams success. Yes talent is key, but if it isn't lead well, what we are left with is Cravens ball. Nevertheless, I really think that we will see all three Baker, John, and Cannon getting mins this season. Each of them bring an entirely different facet to the floor. Baker is more of a 2/3, John 1/2, and Cannon a pure 1. It will be really interesting to see how coach plays them with the other guys...Senglin, Gittens, Ricardson, and Jefferson.

Lastly, I don't think we will ever have to see Kyndahl Hill trying to play the 3. I've heard that he might be our primary backup at the 4/5. He has grown and is the strongest guy on our team.

Jordan is 6'11'' now and still growing. Because his frame is still growing, it is difficult for him to put on weight right now. He has actually lost a little weight since arriving. Young men like him will sometimes grow until they are 21 or older. I don't know what his projections are, but he may be the first 7' plus guy at WSU for quite a while. He is very thin right now and may not be able to put on a lot of muscle for a while. We need to be understanding of this process.

Although Stavrev may have stopped growing taller, he has just begun to start filling out. His skills are good, but his strength needs to improve. The problem is that we may not have the luxury of red shirting them both. One of them may have to be a back up for our front court.

We have a lot more depth at the guard positions. However, one of them is coming off a shoulder injury and has not yet been cleared to play. That alone may be a great reason to consider a RS year for him. Other than that, nothing is set in stone.

If Jordan is 6'11" inches now, why would they list him as 6'10" on the roster on Weber's athletics site? Runner who confirmed to you that he is indeed 6'11"? The roster also says that he weighs 220, but every other site that I could find says that he is 200. Runner do you know his actual weight?

Good question baller. I've noticed, over the years, that players are often found to be a different height and weight than listed on recruiting sites. However, those measurements seem to stay with them for at least a year. Last year we had a 6'6'' signee who turned out to be 6'4''. The taller measure stayed on the roster. My guess is that Jordan's measurements would not be changed from what was listed coming out of HS, at least until next year, if ever. Everyone knows that those numbers mean next to nothing, and they are not going to change them every time someone gains or looses a little. At any rate, it's how they play that is more important than how big or small they are...., to a point. My confirmation came from within the program. Once he is allowed to mature a little, he will play very big. They may measure him again next summer and list his new measurements on next years roster, or not. I think he will become an outstanding player for us.
