The Hornets don’t play ASU until Saturday. I was hoping to head to PHX to check it out but the wifey has peeps coming to town so I think I’m stuck in SD this weekend.

ASU (4-1) hosts Ark-Pine Bluff tonight so it will probably be on the Pac-12 Network if anyone is interested in checking it out. Their schedule has been kind of soft so far but they have faced (and lost) to a ranked Creighton and rolled UCA by 15. It all depends on how the Hornets play but this will be a tough one.

You guys are playing some real good ball right now, keep it up  a win vs the Sun Devils would be huge

GO HORNETS

ASU Stats: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/stats/_/id/9/arizona-state-sun-devils

ASU gets it done from every position on the floor. Freshman guard (#1) Jahii Carson is averaging 19.0 ppg, 5.5 apg with a scorching 41.2% from behind the arc. He does average 4.3 turnovers/game so maybe the Hornets can pressure him into mistakes. Swingman (#0) Carrick Felix is averaging 15.3 ppg and 5.5 rpg and is killing it from behind the arc (47.8%). The other Sun Devil averaging in double digits is center (#13) Jordan Bachynski with 11.8 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and 5.3 bpg. Bachynski is a 7 footer so I don’t know if we can defend him in the paint. ASU has 2 others who are almost averaging double digit scoring. This game is going to be a matchup nightmare across the board.

I’m not optimistic about this game (am I ever optimistic for a money game in any sport?) but I‘m hoping the Hornets can live up to the moment and put forth a solid effort. ASU hasn’t been overly impressive this year but they will be the best team we have faced thus far. I’ll be content with a hard fought game with minimized mistakes and less sloppy play from the previous couple of games.

This game will be on the Pac12 Network again. Not sure if I will be able to find a bar in my area with this on though. :ohno:

Have to slow down Jahii, he is the engine for their team. If the Hornets can do that and get scoring down low from Dickson and Veteto, this game could be very interesting.

here is the live link to the game. I see Katz got ejected and it sparked an ASU run.

Hornets lost 90-70. I didn’t see any of it but it sounds like the Hornets got rolled. It also sounds like the Hornets battled all the way through but couldn’t get within striking range once they fell behind. Anyone know why Katz was ejected? The Hornets didn’t shoot the ball as well as they have been (2-pt: 40.0%, 3-pt: 31.8%, FT: 65.2%) and ASU was hot from behind the arc (11/29, 37.9%) but the Hornets did take care of the ball and only had 9 turnovers. A ton of fouls were called on the Hornets (27) and a lot of players were in foul trouble (Veteto fouled out in 16 minutes, 3 others had 4 fouls). The Hornets lost the boards by 11. Eberhard finally had a good shooting night so hopefully this gets him going.

I’m not going to get down on the Hornets for this loss as they did not match up well on paper. The most concerning stat to me is the poor FT shooting on the night (15/23) as there is no excuse for not knocking down the freebies. The Hornets have a week to shake this off and get ready for the short trip to SJSU. And BTW, the Hornets are still atop the BSC with a 5-2 record. 8-)

It was hard to completely tell why Katz got the technicals but from what I saw on TV it looked to me like he was just complaining to get the first one, I believe it was after a charge was called against the Hornets, but not sure. Then a little later he kept talking to the officials, whether he was trying to get kicked out/trying to figure out why he got the first T/just kept complaining I am not really sure. The bottom line is this came at a time that the Hornets were repeatedly called for fouls and Katz clearly thought we were getting the raw end of the deal. I don't mind Katz getting the first technical to try and get the guys a little fired up and try and spark a comeback but obviously getting kicked out of the game for whatever reason is never a good thing.

Next time Coach Katz gets kicked out of a game he should get a little more animated. Joe Cravens anyone???

Interesting on the technicals. I have no problem with Katz getting kicked out in a game like that, especially if the fouls are heavily one-sided as it appears was the case. Maybe next time he should throw a chair for good measure. :-P

Agreed. As long as you're gonna get tossed, you may as well get your money's worth. I've never really seen Katz as the use-an-ejection-to-light-a-fire-under-the-team kind of guy, but sometimes it's necessary in basketball and baseball.

If you want to do it right, you could do worse than take lessons from Billy Martin and Lou Piniella.

Hornet women's team notched another victory for Sac State over the Pac 12, beating Oregon State for their 4th win in a row. Both men and women are off to a great start.
