M: at #24 UCLA

Hornets hanging tough. Down 14-12 under 12 minutes left in the 1st half.

22-17 Under 8 minutes. Stuteville with 3 PFs. UCLA has a massive size advantage but has yet to exploit it that much.

UCLA pulling away, mainly at the FT line. 36-23 UCLA at the half. Good ball movement for the Hornets that got them open shots, as usual they just aren't hitting them. Huge foul discrepancy in favor of UCLA.

Stuteville and Garrity look like the only DI caliber players for us on the court. I really like Stuteville. This kid has four (possibly 5) years to refine his skills, develop awareness, etc. He's not soft like I thought he might be. He'll be a quality BSC big year one with all conference potential.

Travis Jackson. Redshirt no more, hmmmmm?
Typical Katz roster move. Jackson will see maybe 20 minutes this season. Brilliant.

How do you not RS him?! Every news article and quote said that was the plan. Steve McElroy and Brian Berger were stunned on the radio. He's a pure PG. How play him with Garrity playing 39.9 minutes???

It's Katz. Throw logic out the window.

86-50 Final. Well didn’t expect a different outcome, but disappointed in many aspects of tonight’s performance. Plenty of open looks from the perimeter were missed. It’s still early in the season but it’s clear Garrity will be the lone threat from outside, Hornets went 7/30 from 3, Garrity made 6 of them. Ball handling was very poor, too many giveaways with poor passes and poor ball handling. Also disappointed in the poor transition D in the 2nd half. It was clear the Hornets just wanted to get out of there. It turned into a playground shoot around session for the Bruins.

The positives were few and far between. Hornets battled for the first 10 minutes but someone besides Garrity needs to find a way to score, especially inside. Also there was some good ball movement that got some open looks. Also props to the UCLA play by play guys. They did their homework and knew some of the ins and outs regarding Hornet hoops. It was funny hearing them trying to spin the 5 year deal Wanless gave to Katz as a good thing.

There are a couple things I would like to know.
1. Did you SD or Kadeezy ever have a conversation with Trevis Jackson?
2. Did you SD or Kadeezy ever have a conversation with coach Katz?
3. Did you SD or Kadeezy ever have a conversation with any of Trevis Jackson's family or anyone else who has any "facts" as to his particular situation?
I'm going to assume the answer to each of the above is NO. Before you rush off and come up with an assumption that you have no facts to support I think it might be prudent to wait until you have the information you need. I have the information but it's none of your business nor anyone else's unless Mr. Jackson cares to let you in on the facts.

SD and Kadeezy have been here long enough to have a reputation for "doing their homework." They go to great lengths to get the right info. Given their work here in the past, I'm inclined to assume that they have done so HERE as well. They have more informed opinions than the rest of us.

Jesus, who pissed in your wheaties peegeepee? Lol...

I read several articles that made mention of Jackson redshirting this season. Also Steve McElroy mentioned it in these early season broadcasts. The SID, Brian Berger even sounded shocked last night. I was thinking it was weird that Trevis had an arrangement to travel, so I guess in retrospect I shouldn't be so surprised that he actually got in a game. Still, it doesn't make sense to me to burn a redshirt for a promising redshirt when you have a healthy starter locked into a position (See Jihad Vercher).

Here you go pgp:

He has decided to redshirt his freshman year to give him more time to bulk up and learn the system. He’ll travel with the team and practice, but will not likely be offered a scholarship until he completes his freshman year. That is unless injuries or his performance in practice warrants his activation.

We've seen Katz pull plenty of head scratching roster moves over the past 5 years. This is nothing new for us.

I appreciate all the work that SD and Kadeezy do on this site but I still assume the answers to my questions are NO. If you read the statement that you cite SD it says that coach Katz was for a redshirt year. If you believe that statement which I believe was true at the time then it makes sense that something beyond Katz's control occurred to change the direction of the situation. I (as an un apologetic Katz supporter) have seen him attacked for things he had no control of. If you wish to attack his coaching that is one thing that is open to your criticism but when you read between the lines to place blame on him in a situation that can have many other determining factors I feel it is unfair. BTW I don't think the number of years that you have been posting should invalidate any post I share. I don't post about football because I have no knowledge about what is going on there but in basketball I have played and watched basketball for over 50 years so I think I have a legitimate amount of experience to speak on the sport.

I’m not taking it as an attack, and no I don’t know the behind the scenes details regarding this move. If Jackson was played for some off the court reason then so be it, but from a roster management standpoint it doesn’t make any sense.

There are already reserve players on the bench who can eat up garbage time minutes and/or give Garrity a few minutes of rest a game. I’m not seeing the tradeoff of a burned redshirt for a minute here and there. Garrity is only a junior; there would have been plenty of opportunity to work Jackson in next season as a RFR.

Here is what frustrates me with these inexplicable roster moves. This program is at a huge disadvantage due to having the worst D1 facilities in the NCAA so Katz has to get creative to make this program competitive. One such way is to bring in guys most other D1 programs overlook or are uninterested in and develop them into players that can contribute on the court. Giving these types of players an extra year via a redshirt so the player can spend his time in the weight room, on the practice court, watching film, in the classroom, etc. is an option available for Katz.

I agree with all your pts SD but the fact still remains that the move was NOT Katz's decision. That is all I'm going to say about the subject.
