M: Early 2015-16 Rankings

Jon as bigskybball.com cranked out extremely early rankings for next season. Similarly to this season, I think the BSC crown will be up for grabs again next season. A few teams will be above the rest but IMO it won’t be by much. Jon’s rankings are as follows:
  • 1. Weber State
    2. Montana
    3. Eastern Washington
    4. Northern Arizona
    5. Southern Utah
    6. Northern Colorado
    7. Portland State
    8. North Dakota
    9. Sacramento State
    10. Idaho
    11. Montana State
    12. Idaho State
Since schedules are not out and recruiting classes have yet to be finalized, I think this is based more on a talent ranking then a “who beats who” type of scenario (one I’m sure he will do when next season gets closer). Also note that he forgot to mention Hornsby in our review, and Hornsby will be a very good frontcourt player next season. That alone should bump us up a few spots. I tend to view the BSC in 3 tiers: top, middle, bottom. Here is how I would have them grouped:

Top Tier
  • • Eastern Washington: Harvey got all the attention for the Eagles this season but I feel that Jois carried that team. They get him back and should be in the running if they find some backcourt players.
    • Montana: The Griz return a talented guard in Dunn and a stud frontcourt player in Breunig. They return a lot of experience and if they can get others to step up their production, they will be just fine.
    • Weber State: The Wildcats return a lot and it just seemed like they never really came together as a team last season. They return key pieces in the backcourt with Gittens and Senglin and stud Bolomboy in the frontcourt which makes them a contender.
    • Northern Arizona: The Jacks graduated a lot of their top scorers but return a top guard in Yanku and a few pieces around him. I had a hard time seeing which team rounds out the top tier, Yanku is the differentiator imo.
Middle Tier
  • • Northern Colorado: The Bears always seem to be a solid team year in and year out. They lost some key players but always seem to find quality backcourt players. It sounds like that will be the case again with returners Michael and Wilson.
    • Sacramento State: The Hornets strength will be in the frontcourt with Hornsby, E Stuteville, and Strings coming off the bench. The big question will be who steps up alongside Demps in the backcourt. Perimeter shooting will need to be found to have a successful season.
    • Southern Utah: The T-Birds were a young team that played a ton of players and saw significant improvement as the year progressed. That should translate into a competitive season for them next season as pretty much everyone returns.
    • Portland State: The Vikings graduated their top shooters but return some quality frontcourt players in Tucker and Spickerman. Could be a long season for them if they can’t find a backcourt.
Bottom Tier
  • • North Dakota: The NoNicks had a horrible season with a fair amount of talent on their roster, and pretty much lose all of that for next season. They are also having players (and rumors of more) transferring out. The ship be sinkin’.
    • Idaho: The Vandals had some talent but couldn’t do anything with it. That talent graduates (or is transferring) and they are left with only a few pieces returning. Couple that with the Coach Verlin meltdown at NAU and it seems like things could be falling apart for that program.
    • Montana State: The Bobcats are in rebuild mode and will enter the 2nd year of Coach Fish. They lose a lot of players that seemingly didn’t fit into the new philosophy. Total rebuilding year ahead of them.
    • Idaho State: The Bengals are a dumpster fire. They under preformed with some pretty solid pieces this season and most of that talent is graduating. Given our poor history I can’t help but sympathize for them (and be grateful that those days are behind us, thanks again Katz!).

I don't know much about any other teams but I think we will be getting some of our outside shooting from Mason Stuteville. He is a real good outside shooter and at 6'10" it will be hard for anyone to guard him on the perimeter. He may end up a starter next year. Strings will be good on the inside on both ends of the court. Graves will probably get the start at the other guard but Jeff Wu may surprise us. Being a BBall junkie I'm starting withdrawals right now and need a fix to feel right again. Guess I just have to go to some AAU events to calm my cravings. CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR TO START!!!!!!
