M: vs CSU Bakersfield

The Hornets (1-0) host Bako (0-2) tomorrow night. Bako is coming into this game on a 2 game losing streak having lost to UT-Arlington and at Cal. They have some respectable players returning and will be looking to turn things around in The Nest. This will be the first real competition for the Hornets so we will see how this team responds to a real opponent. Bako has had our number the past few years but if the Hornets want anyone to take them seriously this season, they need to get off on the right foot in this game.

Any of you characters going to the game tonight?

I went to the UTA game, then watched the Cal debacle for the Runners on TV. They are experienced, quick, play sound defense, and hustle. Can't shoot worth a lick and lack size. Their point guard and leading scorer is out for the season with a knee injury, and they haven't adapted yet.

I will be listening to the game on the radio. Would tell you good luck, but I would be lying. How bout, here's to a good game?

34-28 Hornet lead at half. Hornets led by as much as 12. The Hornet offense is hard to watch. Instead of attacking the basket, all they do is pass it around the perimeter until someone decides to jack up a 3. To no surprise, no one is really good at making 3's. In the rare events when the Hornets did attack the basket, good things have happened.

Conversely I don't know what is up with Bako. They have the athleticism to destroy the Hornets but are content to play a low tempo style of game. Manard (sp) has drained 6 3's for them and has kept the Runners in it. Not a bad effort defensively for the Hornets, but they have been looking pretty weak on the glass. Game is up for grabs.

The Runners are a mess to start the season. Sounds like you guys are better than last year. CSUB is getting handled by you guys. Didn't expect that.

Interested in your take SD. In th game I went to, the only time they were effective is when they pressed UTA. Thought they should have done more of that.

85-67 Hornet win.

I agree with CPSlograd. Poor game planning by the Bako coach for this one. However I must say that I was somewhat impressed with the Hornets. We surprisingly dominated for most of the game, and Katz actually made some defensive adjustments and shut down Manard in the 2nd half and Katz also attacked the glass more on the other end. The Hornets finally close the door in a game that typically would have ended in a nail bitter.

It is good to see we have another scoring threat in McKinney to go along side Garrity. Carbs looks awful and I was surprised Katz gave him that much playing time. His ability to score in the paint is terrible but to Carbs' credit, he did have a solid game from the stripe. Dickson had some amazing 3 point plays as well. I thought the Hornets should have fed him down low more. Eberhard had a quiet game and Veteto was just meh. Quigley had a slow start but finished strong. He needs to work on his free throws.

Good all around game on the Hornets side of things. Defense was ok, offense was ok. Still plenty of things to clean up but this was definitely a promising start to the season. I hope the Hornets can build off of this and keep this going as they head up to SLC to face Utah next.

What's the story on McKinney? He lit the Runners up.

Oh, and congrats. That's twice in a month between CSUB and Poly, getting tired of saying that.

Nice win, good to see the Hornets put together a solid game!

I'm looking forward to the Utah game - excited to see how they match up.

For those on the board Bakersfield normally plays a slow deliberate game on offense as seen mainly in the first half of this game. The Hornets played especially well on defense tonight running a 1-1-3 zone for some of the game that was very effective and seemed to cause multiple turnovers in the second half and was particularly effective when Quigley was in the game because of his length and mobility. This defense is similar to the one that Idaho St and new coach Bill Evans used Saturday in their game in which they played Utah St very close. The hornets also ran a 3/4 court pressure some of the time that did not create any turnovers, but made Bakersfield use up some of the shot clock which I think is the goal. Not sure if this defense is something that we will see going forward or just something used against a porous Bakersfield 3pt shooting besides Maynor who made 6 1H threes. I disagree with SD about Carbajal when we were in man to man he was playing great defense on Maynor and he normally does finish his shots when he gets into the paint. The Hornets on offense are playing very fast getting 70+ possessions in both of the games so far, which means we might want to go to a little bit deeper of a rotation if we continue to play fast to prevent fatigue in the long conference season.

I thought it was Eberhard on Maynor not Carbs. In that case good on Carbs for shutting him down in the second half. He still struggled on the other end of the floor though. Too many misses from point blank range.

Jackson covered Maynor in the second half. Very effective. Hey, he still got 10 points and some good boards too. If that's an "off night" for him, I'll take it everyday of the week and twice on Sunday!

I agree with mattman, Carbajal had a decent night. He missed some open threes but he played good defense and he got 4 offensive boards. You only get offensive boards with desire. He also hasnt missed a free throw this year which was a mental problem last year. The Hornets have a chance to beat Utah if they shoot it effectively. So far Im very impressed. SD, youve got to forget the past and get on board. GO HORNETS

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. I’m still cautiously optimistic about this team. They did look good at times, but they had some stretches of the sloppy play that we have become accustomed to. Plenty of time to improve and the low number of fouls and turnovers is a positive. We'll see where they go from here.

I agree with this, but the bottom line is we also have better players this year than we have in the past.
