M: vs Idaho

The Hornets (9-6, 3-1 BSC) will look to rebound as they welcome Idaho (7-7, 2-1 BSC) to the Nest. The Vandals have a lot of scorers as 3 players average at least 13.4 ppg: Hill (15.6 ppg), Scott (14.4 ppg, 5.3 apg), and Wiggs (13.4 ppg) and as a team are 2nd in the BSC in scoring (behind EWU). To top that off they have some bigs that rebound the ball well as they lead the BSC in rebounding.

I think the Hornets will get back on track a win a close one against a tough opponent. Idaho has struggled on the road and I think their struggles will continue Thursday night. We will get to see what this Hornet team is really made of on this home tilt.

Very tough weekend coming up. Idaho is sort of a Jekyll and Hyde team. They have played very good at times and very bad at other times. If we play up to our abilities we should be able to beat which ever team Idaho brings, if we have an off night we need them to have an off night also. We have played pretty consistently at the Nest so I'm looking for a win Thursday. Need all the support we can muster, so if at all possible, come on out to the Nest and root on the Hornets!!!!!

Huge home stand for our Hornets.

Time to take on Idaho and EWU and defend home court.

Get this done and first place in the Big Sky is ours to have after it is done. This is our year and this is our time.

Go Hornets.

Sac State Pride.

79-76 Hornets win.....

Sweet

4-1 in Big Sky right behind 5-0 EWU with the Eagles coming to town on Saturday night.

Go Hornets!!!

Forgot EWU is 4-0 right now and the Hornets 4-1. Eagles 13-4 overall and Hornets 10-6.
Two best teams in the Big Sky record wise face off in Hornet Gym Sat.

We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight but Mikh bailed us out with a HUGE second half (27 pts). The officiating tonight was very inconsistent. Some ticky tack fouls called and then a blatant foul not called. It went both ways but I think that's what got the Idaho coaches a technical at the end of the first half. Nobody on the floor could ever figure out what was or wasn't a foul. Hard to play that way. Sac really gutted this one out and made plays at the end for the win. Now we need to get EWU Saturday night. I see Venky Jois (EWU's starting center and leading rebounder and second leading scorer) hurt an ankle tonight against PSU and only played 9 minutes. Won't hurt to not have to see him on the floor Saturday (he is a load).

79-76 Hornet win. Yeah, I was at the game. For a second I thought I slipped through a way back machine and landed in 2005. Line at the student entrance, line at the ticket booth, good to see people come out and support the Hornets (good Idaho presence as well).

Hornets got out to a nice start but Idaho pulled back in it. Hornets did a great job of controlling the tempo early, but then lost the handle on thing in the last 6 minutes or so of the half (foul trouble with the bigs didn’t help). Hornet struggled early from the floor and especially at the stripe (15/26 :yikes: ). Honrsby played well inside early but he couldn't finish on a lot of point blank shots. He did have a solid game on the boards. Idaho shot the ball well from the perimeter in the 1st half and got them the lead. Fortunately McKinney saved the game and just dominated. Idaho took some really poor shots down the stretch. Great to see this team win these types of games, a very refreshing change.

I agree with the comment on the refs. Completely sporadic but at least it affected both teams. This same gripe has gone on for years in the BSC; unfortunately I don’t see it ever changing.

Good to hear you were there SD....need even more bodies to come out Saturday...we beat almost the exact same EWU team last year in the Nest by 11 (we led by as many as 21)....We will have to shoot the ball a little better but that is not an unattainable goal...good outside defense will be needed too, but we got some practice last night on that and we really did improve that aspect in the second half...No excuses for not turning out for a game with first place on the line....BE A FAN....GO HORNETS!!!!!!

vs Eastern Washington

The Hornets (10-6, 4-1 BSC) have a battle for the spot atop the BSC with a match-up against EWU (13-4, 4-0 BSC) tonight at the Nest. This game will be telling for both teams. EWU comes in as one of the top scoring teams in the nation and are led by one of the best scorers in the nation. EWU’s junior guard Harvey (23.4 ppg) is an absolute stud and can completely take over a game. He has plenty of support including forwards Jois (18.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Mijkovic (10.1 ppg). Jois missed a lot of time with an ankle injury at Portland State Thursday night so he is questionable for tonight.

This is going to be another tough one for the Hornets. If Jois doesn’t play I think the Hornets have a shot at controlling the boards. However the Hornets struggled against the top shooting teams so far (UNC & Idaho) and I think they will struggle again tonight. This game is a must see event, well worth the price of admission.

Hornets are in 1st place!!!!!

5-1 and on top of the Big Sky.

90-77 victory over the excellent undefeated Eagles of Eastern Washington.

So amazing to feel tonight that we are a basketball school with both basketball teams in first place.
after 6 games in the Big Sky. This is a first and it feels great and something all Hornets can enjoy.
And oh so nice to see Hornet Gym filled tonight and may it be filled the rest of the season.

So proud of the Hornets!!

Roll on.

Best of luck at Idaho State and Weber State. Both great opponents coming up for us.

90-77 Hornet win!!! Great game by the Hornets in front of a packed house. I don't think I have seen any Hornet team play this well against that type of quality opponent ever. Demps had a huge game and led the team with 22 pts ( a perfect 10/10 from the stripe) and 3 other Hornets had 12 or more points (McKinny, Hornsby, Barlett). The most impressive aspect to me was the Hornets ability to run with EWU (tied at 41 after 1) and then control the tempo, slow the game down and watched McKinney and Garrity run their guards into the ground with all the motion in the 2nd half. Harvey was gassed and wanted no more in the closing minutes.

Great adjustments by Katz. Loved how he went small with Hornsby and Mills up front and Demps, Garrity, McKinney, and Barlett (4/4 3pts) in the back court in the 2nd half. That really shored up the defense and EWU had a hard time getting open looks. Phenomenal game.
