M: vs. McNeese State

The Hornets host McNeese State who comes in a 2-2 with their only wins thus far being against non-D1 opponents. Their guards are their leading scorers but they have some big men on the roster and they are 55th ranked in rebounding in D1. The Hornets are going to keep their edge while battling for boards and the Hornets will need to keep shooting the ball well if they want a win. McNeese does not shoot the ball well from beyond the arc and it looks like they have some struggles from the stripe.

SD, should I get more interested in watching out team play this year? I've always browsed the box score with our bball team. Interesting enough, i'm a die hard basketball guy, which makes it harder for me to watch Sac State basketball games. I coached basketball and played my whole life, so I notice every little thing that happens during a game and it's maddening to watch Sac State struggle through the years, so I've stayed away.

Everything I read about the team has had me curious so far, but I don't need my heart broken like the football team did to me this year. I want to catch this game on bigskytv, but don't want to end up throwing something thru my laptop screen.

Pretty excited for tonight's game...well, I guess I'm always excited for basketball season and it's games. I think we can be cautiously excited about this team and this season. I'm pretty sure this is the first time Katz has stated he's been "excited" about a team and also they have so much experience back this year, which can only be a good thing. GO STATE!

Well H25, it appears that Katz finally brought in players that fit into his system and have some talent. The new backcourt players have been playing a lot better than in recent past, and the team has been playing better. Garrity has been great at distributing the ball to players who are open and they have been making their shots. I guess my advice to you is to approach with caution. I have been suppressing my excitement and optimism because I know the minute I give into those emotions, this team will hit a brick wall. I’ll be driving back to SoCal this evening so I won’t be able to watch any of it, but I’m going to try to tune in to the audio feed via my smart phone. :twocents:

Hornets us 40-23 at half. They have played pretty solid. They are shooting 65% from the floor and are playing good D.

Hopefully they can keep it rolling in the 2nd half.

Did anyone else just hear Steve elude to Sacbuzz/Sac State Sports during his broadcast? lol...

Go Hornets!

In the past Katz have always hyped up his recruits and they all with the exception of Dixon have been less than advertised. This year he talks about experience and how no Sac State team has ever returned 8 players with D1 experience. Yet the 3 players who leads the team in minutes had no D1 experience coming into the season. In fact, I doubt you'll ever see a rotation of 5 players from last year's team on the floor at the same time.

That said, I wonder if Katz actually knew how good Eberhard, Estrada, and Garrity really were. Which makes me wonder if this recruiting class was accidental. In any event, they're here and playing well, so he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I said we needed a post player and a point guard and I didn't see Eberhard or Garrity filling those needs, but they've been a surprise. I thought Estrada could be a solid back up point but I didn't see him getting 25.5 mins per game. I know Carbajal's return might change things, especially if he can play to his potential.

We really needed to win this game. With a favorable schedule and a possibility to get 3 more wins by conference play we can still struggle to win 10 games this year. But saying that, we only lose Jackson and McCarver to graduation, which makes next year really promising. Anything over 10 wins this season is a blessing and next year should be very interesting.

Well H25, you have your answer with this 68-63 loss. The Hornets just justified why there isn’t a reason to get excited about this program this season. I was able to listen to most of the game and the Hornets played a great first half but a God-awful second half that was reminiscent of last season’s horrible team play. There is no excuse for blowing that big halftime lead. I couldn’t see what adjustments (if any) were made by Katz to handle the press but it didn’t work. Estrada had a horrible game and probably should have seen more bench time. They needed a win here with 3 road games (all probable losses), the Hornets are primed for their annual meltdown/tailspin.

Katz was telling the kids what they needed to do and they still panicked and didn't execute. Don't blame it on Katz. Hopefully they will learn from it and listen to coach!

Breaking a press is fundamental. They looked like they had never seen one before. So for that, I blame the coach. It should be muscle memory on how to run a press break. Practice, practice, practice. Even if McNeese St. was able to force several turnovers with their press, Sac should have had easy layups 50% of the time. That would have forced the defense out of it. It's the reason why schools usually run a press out of desperation and for short periods of time at this level.

I can say that I was not disappointed, because I didn't have high expectations. I was just reminded why I find it hard to watch the team play. I'll keep watching though and hoping for the best. Throw my two cents in every now and then.
