M: vs Menlo, Exhibition

Damn you are right. It’s not listed on the BSTV website, only tonights vball games. Damn now I might actually have to go…

There were a few mild surprises in this game. First surprise was that Quigley started and played 21 mins. First big off the bench was Salley but he got 3 quick fouls which limited his time. The freshmen all played rather tentatively (not surprised) until late in the game when Hornsby started to play a little looser with some decent results. Rada only got in for mop up time but he looked ok on the offensive end. I think all the newbies will have to earn time by busting it on defense. Katz has always put a premium on defensive performance hence Quigley's amount of playing time. Tiffen played reasonably in the middle. Stuteville looked to be thinking instead of reacting which is to be expected in his first game. Mills looked very lackadaisical at best (very disappointing). Looking to see some improvement by next week.

I saw the same thing. Looks like Tiffin and Stuteville will platoon the 5, neither showed that they will be a scoring threat on anything further than 2 feet from the rim. Tiffin did a good job battling for boards, but it was against a much smaller lineup.

Garrity and McKinney will be the heart and soul (and lone scoring threats) this season. Barlett had some moments driving to the rim, he has some serious hops.

3 is wide open. Demps didn’t look to improve much on last season (poor FT shooting will haunt him) and that is not good. He was very hesitant when catching the ball on the top of the key and just doesn’t look comfortable out there. I was impressed with Hornsby’s athleticism; I think he has the most potential to make an impact this season. Was disappointed Rada didn’t see more time. We will not have any perimeter scoring threats aside from Garrity and McKinney (who is a better slasher scorer imo) and having Rada step in late and drain his first 3-pt attempt was promising. Mills only saw 2 minutes so not sure he will be in the mix this season.

We will have issues at 4. Salley is by far the most athletic for that spot but he battled foul trouble and Quigley can’t do anything on the offensive end beyond point blank range. I knew we were going to miss Dickson a lot but I think it will be worse than most expect.

Also we had some serious defensive issues. Time and time again whenever the ball went into the corner 3 defenders converged on the ball leaving multiple shooters wide open. If this doesn’t get fixed it will be a scoring free for all for opponents. Couple those issues with an inability to generate any points outside of Garrity and McKinney and we could be in for a long season.

I think we may think strongly about giving Hornsby a look at the 4 spot. He is similar to Dickson in body type maybe even a bit bigger. He had 7 boards in 10 mins against Menlo playing the 3. We will have to go small quite a bit this year and he might fit at 4 in those situations. According to reports he can shoot the 3 so that would be a nice bonus at the 4. A lot to be determined by performance on the defensive end as I said before. Quigley started last year in front of Veteto to start the season and even a few times later because of his defense. I don't think Hornsby is going to beat out Demps because of his (Demps) defense.
