Anyone planning on going or listening/watching it? It’s a double header with the women who host CSU Fullerton. A late tipoff (7 pm) on a Friday night so I’m not sure how much I’ll catch as I’ll be getting suited and booted to hit the town later in the evening. This should be a win. It’ll be interesting to see who plays and how they do, specifically regarding the newcomers.

Menlo doesn't appear to be very talented - two significant losses to NAIA teams and then they were hammered by UDC in an exhibition game (lost by 45). Menlo has turned the ball over in huge numbers and based on the Hornets last game I'm expecting this to be a very sloppy game. Ultimately I believe the Hornets will win 79-58, but it's going to take a while for this team to gel with one another.

Unlike football, I think Katz and Wanless did a good job putting together a schedule that will give them a chance to build as the season progresses!

I didn't expect the Hornets to run away with this game early, but being tied with Menlo at the half is a really bad effort. Here are my thoughts on the first half:

1. Hornets are really bad with their on the ball defense. They were consistently beaten off the dribble so Katz switched to a zone. Very surprised that a bad NAIA team can consistently beat a D1 team.

2. Rebounding - teams are about even with rebounding numbers. Hornets are bigger and supposed to be more athletic.

3. Athleticism - The Hornets have no advantage with athleticism, Menlo looks much more athletic off the dribble.

4. Hornets offense - I just don't get what they're trying to accomplish. They get the ball to the high post but just hold the ball. The low post game is just trying to back someone down - very few cuts and the spacing is terrible.

5. Intensity - the Hornets are the home team but Menlo is playing with energy, not Sac St. The Oaks bench players are totally in the game while the Hornets bench just sits there.

I know it's early but after one half I'm VERY nervous about the season. I hope it's just a matter of time to get but I'm concerened about the lack of athleticism shown by the Hornets. Come on Katz, get them going!!

No final observations OH?

Sounds like the Hornets squeaked by a very bad Menlo team 70-56. Expect to be on the wrong side of a lot of curb stompings this season.

From the box score it looks like it was an ugly night. 14.3% from 3 and 44.0% from the field. FT shooting was good at 77.4%. Only out rebounding a much smaller team by 5 is awful. Also I noticed 3 Hornets who almost fouled out. It looked like a foul fest with 26 Menlo fouls to 24 Hornet fouls.

Looks like Katz is set on Garrity and Eberhard for the back court as Eberhard played the whole game and Garrity played all but 4 minutes. Jackson led the scoring with 19 points in 31 minutes. Eberhard had 11 points and Garrity and Estrada followed with 9 points. Dickson 8 points in 14 minutes. My guess is he was battling foul trouble. According to the articles above, Carbajal went down with an injury.
