M: vs Montana’s

The Hornets will be looking to continue their winning streak as a flailing MSU team comes to The Nest tonight. MSU worked the Hornets pretty good in Bozeman but come into this game on a 3 game losing streak. The Hornets will need to bring their best game for a full nights worth of work if they want to have a chance at victory as this is a winnable game if they take care of business. The Hornets need a split in this weeks games to keep their hopes alive for a BSC Tournament berth.

Great win by the Hornets last night. Seems like they are rounding into form at the right time. Big game tomorrow night against the Griz.

86-76 Hornet victory. I didn’t see any of it but from the articles I’ve read it sounds like the Hornets dominated for much of the game. The Hornets shot lights out all game long and got a huge win at home. The Hornets will need to play that aggressive and that consistent for a full 40 minutes if they want to have a shot at knocking off Montana tomorrow night. Well done Hornets!

67-58 Hornet loss. I wasn’t able to catch any of the game but the Hornets went into halftime with a 5 point lead. The Hornets had a rough start to the second half and couldn’t rally back. The Hornetsports article pointed out that UM had a large foul call discrepancy in their favor (27-17) which resulted in a large margin of freebies in their favor as well (35 UM to 17 Hornet attempts). In all honesty I don’t know if the foul calls were warranted given that I didn’t see the game, but it doesn’t surprise me that the BSC refs would affect the outcome of a game to protect one of the “perennial” programs in the conference. We’ve seen this happen first hand in football and I have no doubt it also happens in hoops. A 2-1 free throw discrepancy sure doesn’t look good in refuting such a claim.

After all that the Hornets need to regroup and win out their BSC slate which is possible if they can get back to playing like they did during the win streak. Winning out is probably the only shot we have at making the post season. If I can find some time I’ll post an outlook on the chances of making the postseason.

Hey SD, I realize you didn't see the game, so you're only speculating on the foul differntial, but I have to say your speculation is way off base. To begin with, a foul diffential of ten really isn't that significant for a team that's behind and has to foul late to attempt to stay in it. That said, the reason there were a lot of fouls in the game is because Sac kept pace with the Griz the only way they could, by creating an ugly game. Give them credit for doing that. Hell, Montana had 3 starters on the bench most of the first half in foul trouble. If that's beneficial officiating, I'd hate to see unfavorable....

And if you really believe the BSC protects Montana with favorable officiating, I strongly recommend viewing last year's BSC title game.... :o

Per the box score, here is the free throw discrepancy by half:
1st: UM-12, Sac-10
2nd: UM-23, Sac-7

I agree that there could have been a lot of late intentional fouls to lift the count, but after taking a closer look at the play by play, there were only 5 Sac fouls with under 4 minutes left in the game. Take away those 10 FT’s and it’s still a 2-1 discrepancy in the 2nd half. Everyone has seen enough inconstancies in the BSC officiating to know it comes into play from time to time. Why the fouls calling changed from one half to another is beyond me, but everyone has seen it before. It’s one thing to see fouls calls all game long, but to have a huge change from one half to the other is unexplicable.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am by no means defending the BSC officials and like most, this was not a well-officiated game.

It’s one thing to see fouls calls all game long, but to have a huge change from one half to the other is unexplicable

But to use your words, it's one thing to claim poor officiating (which is a given in our league), and quite another to suggest that Montana was being protected by the officials. If that were the case, Cherry, Selvig and Ward wouldn't have been sitting next to Coach T for 10 minutes of the first half.

Meh, I’d be saying the same thing if my team found itself on the favorable side of this issue more often than not.

No, I mean being on the favorable end of a game with questionable officiating.

Like I said, I’ be saying the same thing is questionable calls went our way more often than not.
