M: vs Southern Utah

Since apparently SD is asleep at the wheel I will give you the skinny on the game tomorrow for the Hornets.

Sac State is coming off a bad loss at Northern Arizona on Thursday and Southern Utah is coming off of a big win at Northern Arizona. Sac State lost 57-50 and Southern Utah won 90-77. This is the first year for SUU in the Big Sky after leaving the Summit league they are under their first year with coach Trent Robinson who was an assistant at LSU as well as a former player at Stanford.

SUU:
Shot 8/30 combined from 3pt range in the first two games of conference play but when on a 3pt shooting barrage last Saturday in the first half and ended up going 7/13 on the game, over the season they are a pitiful 28.3%. Sac State loves to give the opposition wide open threes consistently when they play zone so hopefully they miss or Sac is in trouble. SUU's best player is Jackson Stevenett (6-4) Sr. who is crafty and has a really nice mid range flanked by Aussie PG Damon Heuir who doesn't handle pressure very well and is reckless with the ball, he did a really good job of drawing fouls and making 14-16 and the charity stripe on Saturday. 6-11 Jr Jayson Cheesman doesn't have good post moves, but he is a very good shot blocker and SUU as a team is a very adept at blocking shots. I haven't seen them play anything but man to man so Sac State should be able to get rhythm on offense and score some points after being in a slump of late.

Keys to the Game
1) Take care of the basketball: the hornets have been one of the best teams in the conference this year at taking care of the ball and got away from that Thursday when the Hornets turned it over 22 times including a 7 TO performance from McKinney. Southern Utah on the other hand has made a habit out of turning the ball over consistently this year and they have the 5th worst TO% in the nation currently. If Sac State takes care of the ball SUU will give the Hornets extra possessions. TO's lead to run outs and easy buckets, just what the doctor ordered for a struggling offense.

2) Garrity Aggresssion: Garrity needs to come off of PNR looking to score the basketball and draw fouls when he does the offense is much better. Garrity has struggle the first 3 league games going 8/23 from the field and I think this has a lot to do with the amount of zone defense that Sac St has seen in the those games I'm pretty sure SUU plays exclusively man so we should see a better game. He needs to step onto the court every night with the attitude that he is the best player on the court. If they blitz the PNR look for the high-low to screener. SUU does not play good PNR defense so they Hornets should take advantage.

This is a game that the Hornets should win and is very important game for the Hornets because they are going to play 3 games this week and a 4 game road trip vs PSU/EWA then ISU/WSU.

Feel free to take control of the wheel. :)

M: vs Southern Utah

The Hornets (6-5, 1-2 BSC) will try to regroup after an embarrassing game at NAU. The Hornet offense has been terrible the past few games and fans should be concerned about the lack of adjustments and inability of the offense to take advantage of the mismatches. SUU (5-7, 3-0 BSC) is coming in off of a big win at NAU.

Team Stats Comparison: http://hornethome.com/sacramento-state-basketball/compare_stats/southern-utah
  • • Points/Game: Sac: 70.7, SUU: 65.3
    • Points Allowed/Game: Sac: 68.2, SUU: 73.1
    • Rebounds/Game: Sac: 37.8, SUU: 38.0
    • Assists/Game: Sac: 13.3, SUU: 12.3
    • Turnovers/Game: Sac: 12.1, SUU: 18.8
    • FG%: Sac: 41.5, SUU: 43.2
    • 3-PT%: Sac: 36.4, SUU: 29.0
    • FT%: Sac: 72.9, SUU: 70.7
Individual Stats: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/stats/_/id/253/southern-utah-thunderbirds

SUU’s strength looks to be in the front court as they have a handful of forwards leading in scoring. SUU’s top scorers are senior forward (#21) Jackson Stevenett (15.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.0 spg), senior guard (#3) Damon Heuir (14.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.5 apg), and senior forward (#44) Julian Scott (9.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg). SUU rebounds the ball very well and does a great job a clogging the lanes and blocking shots but they turn the ball over a lot and struggle from the perimeter.

This is a must win for the Hornets. A loss here and the Hornets will be lucky to see the BSC Tournament. The Hornets need to win in The Nest since it appears that this team will be unable to win many BSC road games. If the Hornets struggle from the perimeter, they will be in serious trouble.

Go Hornets!!!

Hornets trying to keep it close by missing 24 free throws so far. Unbelievable! Worse than a junior high team. Lead by 5 only, with 20 seconds to go.

Hornets knock off a hot SUU team. They needed that one as they hit the road.

BTW who edited my first post? SH? SHA?

64-59 Final. Good nights from McKinney (18 pts, 2 steals), Veteto (14 pts, 8 boards) and Garrity (12 pts, 6 assists). Garrity got most of his points from the charity stripe and only put up 2 shots. Dickson only played 15 minutes and didn’t score any points :o .

As stated above the free throw shooting was horrid by everyone otherwise this game wouldn’t have finished this close. The Hornets had another poor ball handling night as they gave it away 17 times. Still concerning that this team can’t put a team away when it should and now it looks like ball control is becoming a major concern. The Hornets have a quick turnaround and head out for a Pacific Northwest road trip this week, hopefully they can steal a win on the road.

I don't want to be the bearer of possible bad news but John Dickson came out for the second half with his right hand bandaged. He played only a few minutes in the second half. After the game I asked him what was up and he told me he thought the hand was broken. I sure hope his initial reaction was wrong because we sorely need him the rest of the year.

Not good, keep us posted on this pgp. Fearing the worst, what is the recovery time for a broken hand? 6-8 weeks?
