M: vs the farm extension

The Hornets enter the Hardwood edition of the Causeway on a 3-0 start and fresh off of an upset of Pac-12 opponent Utah. The farm extension (0-2) is coming into this game fresh off of a loss to a struggling NAU program. It looks like their offense runs through their backcourt but doesn’t have much else aside from that. Obviously this is a must win for the Hornets as they look to remain undefeated.

The key on defense will be containing their backcourt and eliminating second chance points. Offensively the Hornets just need to keep doing what they have been which is strong play from Garrity and McKinney as well as getting a solid effort from Dickson, Eberhard, and Veteto. I don’t recall the style of offense they play but the Hornets have shown the athleticism to maintain an up-tempo pace. I believe the Hornets will have the edge in the frontcourt and should have an advantage on the baseline with Dickson and in the paint with Veteto. They don’t appear to have much size so the Hornets need to win the rebounding battle.

Go Hornets!!!

This should be a great game Sac State needs to avoid coming out flat after the win at Utah. UC Davis is coming off of a loss against a much improved and reinvigorated Northern Arizona program with the hiring and tremendous recruiting of Jack Murphy. The game against NAU was very fast paced and I expect the same things tonight. Both teams like to get out in transition and score the ball. I expect Sac State to play less zone tonight because Davis has some really got shooters in Hawkins and Sypkens. Prediction 77-71 Sac State.

I think I will all come down to possession tonight. Davis will keep us on our heels, but I'm hopeful we will pull it out. C'mon boys, give us the win!

LETS GO HORNETS!!!

Final: 87-76 Hornets lose. Perfect example of why I will never get overly excited about Hornet hoops while Katz is here. Hornet blow a 9 point half time lead as the Hornet D was nonexistent in the 2nd half. Aside from Dickson and Garrity, no one really showed up on the offensive end. Hornets had a lot of missed shots from point blank range, Eberhard was terrible and Carbs did nothing but embarrass himself on the offensive end of the floor. I doubt many people from that standing room only crowd ever come to another game this season and I won't blame them either.

I was only listening, but that sounded like a great game to see in person (though your gym...)

Glad to have our first win of the season here. Corey Hawkins is the real deal. You guys' Garrity sounds like he has a lot of potential.

I was impressed with your big man inside. Katz had no answer for him.

Zero adjustments in the 2nd half on either end of the court. For the Hornets not being able to get up for this game shows a good indication of what to expect once conference play opens up.

I disagree. They played a 4 guard set that flew around all night. And once they got the hot stroke there wasn't much anyone could do except to try and disrupt them in the back court. They did a good job on us not being able to attack the glass with a swarming 1-3-1 collapse trap. The biggest thing was they were able to disrupt McKinney. That was the difference. Then we had to rely on outside shot where we had no rhythm all night. Plus, they were perfect from the line. That hurt in crunch time.

Great game tonight at the Nest. You guys have a long, quick team that will cause some havoc for teams this year.

We struggled mightly on the offensive end of the floor in the first half but made some great adjustments in the second half. A couple of your guards (#10 and #5?) were face guarding Hawkins and Sypkens in the first half, which opened up the paint for JT Adenrele. Once he started to heat up, the defense would collapse and left Les, Sypkens and Hawkins open on the outside.

Good luck the rest of the way!

The Hornets had some chances at points in the paint and couldn’t convert. There weren’t a ton of chances inside but easily a handful of missed opportunities that would have made a difference early on.

As far as their 4 guard set, Katz could have tried to go small to match it. We only have about 6 guards on the roster; if keeping up with them was the issue he should have put more speed on the court instead of leaving the slower forwards in there. Regardless nothing was really tried on the defensive end to try and disrupt anything they were doing and that was the disheartening part about it.

I dont know what game you watched but the game I watched had Sac playing with their "slow" forwards, Dickson and Eberhard as the biggest players for quite some time. Lets face it, when you run up against an opponent who is so hot theyre hitting threes as they fall to the court trying to beat the shot clock, it's going to be a long night. I think a bunch of the fans will come back to see this team again and if they don't it's their loss. Any time a team shoots 65% from the field and 100% from the line they will be hard to beat. GO HORNETS

Our downfall occurred right off the bat with the 2nd half. UCD came out like gang busters and the Hornets looked half asleep.

They scored two lay ups in the first 30 seconds and you could already tell that both teams had switched roles from the 1st half. Once it started to get away from us, Katz tried a couple time outs, but nothing slowed their rhythm. They were really bumping Garrity too; he played very well, but pooped out in the last 3 minutes. At one point, maybe within the first 7 minutes or so, they had outscored us 23 to 5. It really hurt when McKinney couldn't get his shot going & Eberhard & Carbajal didn't help much.

A couple times it looked like it might come to blows cuz their guards (Hawkins was the worse offender) were so hyped up and in our faces - and also in the faces of the Hornet fans. It was a good thing that ref called a "T" when he did.

Apparently, I must have been watching a different game also. "Zero adjustments in the 2nd half on either end of the court. For the Hornets not being able to get up for this game shows a good indication of what to expect once conference play opens up. I saw the Hornets try to play some zone, some full court pressure after a made basket and even full court pressure after a "missed" basket.

I actually thought the Hornets were too amped up in the beginning of the game because of the overflow crowd and because it was Davis. It's easy to say a team wasn't prepared or not "up" for a game, but not true. Unfortunately, Davis got hot, (65% shooting percentage), in the 2nd half, and we lost the game. It's one game, too bad it had to happen against Davis. This team is good, and will do fine this year.

“Too amped up”. Sure, if that is how you want to spin it then fine. What I saw was lack of execution. By all means it’s year 5 under Katz, spin it however you would like. I saw a poor defensive rotation coupled with poor execution on the offensive end in a must win game. Being “too slow” or it being a “poor adjustment” is in the eyes of the beholder. Interpret it however you would like, what I saw was a loss in what should have been a win. Spin it however makes you feel better but I ain't buying it.

So you're saying that with our facilities and history, by now we should be winning every game on our schedule? Because that's how it sounds. Hell, UNC lost to Butler. So they aren't going to be perfect. In fact, in our conf, neither is the two front runners UM and WSU.

Look, I hate losing to davis, but we aren't going to matchup perfectly with every team on the schedule. We also didn't quit either and you have to tip your hat to team that shot 65% in the 2nd half, sometimes making almost impossible shots.

Im done. Bring on UCA. Go Hornets!!!

Look out Roy Williams.....SD will be coming after you next. We all know your bias against Katz but dont let it negate all the good work you do here. I still believe we will get 19 wins this year. GO HORNETS

SHA you are right, we aren’t going to match-up well with everyone but Katz is going to have to find a way to get production out of this talented lineup when we face those type of opponents and that is my concern looking forward. My last post was over the top and unwarranted (and I was drunk and upset as my favorite watering hole was sold and was open for the very last time last night  ). The ags shot lights out I never meant to imply we should be winning every game but this team is by far the most talented team under Katz and seeing a lot of good players struggle in clutch moments was disheartening. We finally have a solid team and I just don’t want to see it go to waste.

I don't know what's worse, losing to the ags or losing your fave watering hole! Sorry to hear that. But you could always come back home and go to Club 2Me or Raven  ;)
