M: vs UNC

It’s the 3rd BSC game for the Hornets and it’s already a must win situation. The Hornets are coming into this home game having yet another inconsistent weekend of play with a horrible loss at NAU followed by a respectable showing against a strong WSU team in Ogden. 40 full minutes of all out effort and the Hornets should be able to find themselves some wins. UNC 4-9 (1-1) has struggled this season; they have had an absolutely brutal OOC schedule against top notch programs but they also have an embarrassing loss to a non D-1 program on their record. They lost a lot of key players from a season ago but still have enough talent to steal a win in The Nest if the Hornets pull a no-show.

UNC has two sophomore guards averaging double digit scoring. Garnica (12.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.0 apg) and Unruh (12.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg) lead a team that shoots the ball well from everywhere. The Hornets are going to have to toughen up their defense and haul in the rebounds to keep UNC from tacking on second chance points. UNC is struggling and the Hornets desperately need a win. This should be a close game and I have to believe the Hornets are slightly favored to win this one.

UNC team stats:
  • • 72.4 points/game
    • 33.8 rebounds/game
    • 12.5 assists/game
    • 5.6 steals/game
    • 2.6 blocks/game
    • 16.2 turnovers/game
    • 47.3 FG%
    • 74.5 FT%
    • 44.4 3-PT%
UNC opponent stats:
  • • 74.0 points/game
    • 29.5 rebounds/game
    • 15.4 assists/game
    • 6.6 steals/game
    • 3.5 blocks/game
    • 12.7 turnovers/game
    • 44.4 FG%
    • 75.2 FT%
    • 37.1 3-PT%

Go Hornets!!!

Final: 61-53 UNC. A complete no-show at home against an opponent who is completely reeling. It’s safe to chalk this season up as a total loss and I have a hard time seeing the Hornets get above 4 BSC wins. Katz once again failed to have this team ready to play after a whole week off and I don’t believe Katz will ever have this team playing much better than it has been so far this season. A mere 3 games into conference play and its evident this is easily the worst program in the BSC. The Hornets were terrible shooting the ball 38.8% from the floor, 31.8% from 3 and 61.5% from the stripe. I wonder if Kats still isn’t concerned.

I was at the game. We had a good crowd and loud too.

Northern Colorado played super defense tho nearly the entire game and you could see that it wore us down towards the end. We really had to work hard to even get a shot off sometimes. Dickson didn't play well the first half again. Hoffman never got untracked; he had way too much spin on his shot and nothing stayed down. Katz ran several plays for him too and he probably shouldn't have cuz he was off that night. I thought McCarver played well and Carbajal hit 3-threes in a row in the first half and had 11, but never hit anything in the 2nd half.

We really missed Jackson I thought; it'd of been real close with him playing.

Tough loss especially with Garnica hurt and Unruh not playing much (or effectively) with a sprained ankle. Katz has to be getting concerned. They have EWU on Thursday, not an easy one to try to get your first conference win.

The game was really physical with the refs letting the game be played out and I think the Hornets didn't react well to not getting a lot of the calls they were used to getting. In response to a previous comment, I don't think it is quite time to cry for the Hornets being the worst team in the BSC. With the parity that exists in spots 3-9, a couple wins in a row mean a ton. The 6 spot is not going to require a lot of wins this year because 3-9 are going to be beating each other all year long.
