M: vs Utah Valley

The Hornets (3-1) host UVU (3-2) tomorrow night. UVU is coming off of a beatdown at the hands of that school that is too afraid to play us this year. UVU also lost handily to a very good EWU team (EWU upset Indiana last week), the Wolverines beat a rebuilding SUU and have a close win against a rebuilding ISU as well. This game will be a good gauge for how the Hornets stack up against those BSC foes that are on the schedule in conference play.

IMO this is a must win home game. UVU is the defending WAC regular season champions but most of the key players from a year ago have graduated. Given UVU’s struggles to score against a weak defensive team across the Causeway, the Hornets should be able to keep UVU under wraps. Hornets still need to clean some things up but this game needs to be a win.

Go Hornets!!!

65-56 Hornet win. Hornets move to 4-1 with the win. The Hornets controlled the game most of the way and had about a 10 point cushion for most of the game. Hornets remained sloppy with the ball and had too many turnovers and cheap fouls. Bad turnovers and poor FT shooting late in the game (McKinney missed the front end of a 1 and 1 3 times) let UVU get a little close. The Hornets should have won by 15-20 points easy if they would have cleaned things up a bit.

On the positive note Hornsby (20 pts, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 blks) had a breakthrough game. He made some clutch shots on the perimeter and was perfect from the floor (8/8 from the floor, 2/2 from downtown), his lone blemish was a missed FT (2/3) and he made some cheap fouls to get into foul trouble.

It's early but I'm a little concerned that the Hornets aren't taking care of the ball. I think the high expectations and added pressure is getting to the team. This might sound silly but it seemed like the team was trying too hard out there tonight. Just ball up and go have some fun and the wins will come. What do you think PGP?

Anyone notice the antics of the UVU coach tonight? At one point he took a TO just to yell at his players. Then when UVU threw the ball away late he got mad and put in all the reserves with under 2 minutes to go. It was half entertaining and half sad. :? :ohno:

What are the expectations this year? Winning record and Big Sky tournament? Chance to win the tournament? I've never really associated the bball program with pressure.

Isn't he a 12th year HC too? Mormon version of Bobby Knight.

My expectations for this team are sky high for Sac State devotees. I expect to be in the thick of the regular season championship and contend for the Big Sky tournament championship which would give us the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament. I still believe Sac can win 20 or more games this year. This is the year for a break-out year with the experience and talent we have coming back. The achilles heel will be whether we can win on the road. I think with the senior guards we have, the road troubles will be a little easier to deal with. Garrity and McKinney have been there, done that, everywhere in the Big Sky. The conference looks to be fairly well balanced so there are no givens, just my own observations. This week and next will give us a much better feel for the year.

I agree with PGP. I’ll be content/happy with a winning record (would be the first in program history) and winning a game in the BSCT. This is a solid Hornet team and there doesn’t appear to be an overly dominant team in the BSC (yet) so winning the BSCT and getting into the Dance isn’t out of the question.
