So I watched the first half of the WSU @ Gonzaga game and I noticed a few things about WSU:
  • • They are a perimeter first team. They typically had 3-4 players behind the arc on their offensive sets. Not sure if they will do the same thing here as their big men have a considerable size and athletic advantage over the Hornets big men. With the defense spread out, their PG Moore would generate penetration which would result in either a drive to the hoop or a pass to a big man crashing the boards along the baseline. They took quite a few mid-range and three point shots and had a couple of players capable of making those baskets. If they have a bad shooting night, the Hornets might be able to keep it close. I think rebounding will be a challenge on both ends of the court for the Hornets.
    • Defensively they ran some 2-3 zone and man. Again, this is an athletic group with good size in the front court so I think penetration and short jumpers will be hard to come by for the Hornets. The Hornets will more than likely rely on perimeter shooting, which if established could open up something inside.
I’m not sure why WSU was picked in the bottom of the Pac-12 as I thought they looked alright against Gonzaga (who did nothing but drain 3’s in the first half). Unless they completely overlook the Hornets, I don’t see this one being that close. I’m hoping the Hornets can keep it within 15 points at the sound of the final buzzer. Hopefully this game is on ESPN or a video feed somewhere.

Here is the Hornetsports preview:

Apparently the game is only available if you pay for it.

Hoffman got the start over Jackson... :dunce:

4-0 Hornet lead early.
I;ve clearly had too much to drink. I think its 9-0 Hornets.
WOW. Hornets are all over WSU early. I think it's 10-2 somewhere just under 16 minutes.
14-2 Hornets.
Hornets racking up a bunch of fouls early. :| Christ, WSU is getting ever call known to man.
Did Rak just dribble through a double team for a 8 ft jumper?!?! :o

I think it's 21-12 Hornet lead just under the 14 minute media break. Fouls will do this one in for the Hornets as they are already at 9 team fouls.Wow great effort so far. Great ball movement, out hustling WSU. Katz brought this team to play.

BS call on McCarver gives him his 3rd. 24-14 Hornets somewhere around 12 minutes.
Jackson called for his 3rd on a BS call. :ohno:

Ha. Eberhard just destroyed a WSU screen and got away with it.
29-16 Hornets under 8 mins. Hornets will have the starting lineup fouled out at around 18 minutes left to go in the game at this rate. The refs are doing all they can to keep this close.

It's about 32-25 Hornets with 5 minutes left. Hornets still hanging tough.
And Katz goes volleyball set with Hoffman running the point. :dunce:

Fuck. WSU found their stride. I'm dumbfounded as to why Katz has Hoffman running the point. :dunce:
It's about 34-27 Hornet lead with under 4 minutes left in the first half. Valiant Hornet effort thus far.
Another tick tack foul send WSU to the line. 36-33 Hornet lead about 2 mins left.
Dickson hits a 3...that is followed by a WSU 3.

39-36 Hornet lead at the half. Katz called the volleyball set with the final shot in the 1st half and the Hornets didn't even get a shot off. Like I said, the volleyball set concedes a possession. Regardless the Hornets have played extremely well. They walked into Pullman, punched WSU right in the jaw knocking them to the floor and then put their nuts right on their fvcking chin. Too bad for the Hornets they didn't see WSU's assistant (the refs) in the corner waiting to blind side them across the back of the head with a lead pipe. Valiant Hornet effort through one half. I think WSU takes over and exploits the Hornet foul trouble in the second half. Still a solid showing.

Refs better not give this game to Wazzu. The amount of foul calls on us is unbelievable!
You got this up before my edit. I agree the refs are changing the game. regardless these guys are playing hard. A few observations:
This group of JC recruits>>>>>last years group of JC recruits.
Rak>>McCarver.
The Hornets are 15/29 (51.7%) from the floor. 3/7 (42.9%) from 3, 6/8 (75.0%) from the stripe and have outrebounded WSU by 3 (15 to 12). Great ball movement. Great effort. Way to represent.

Home from work, ready to watch the second half. Sounds like I missed a good one!
Fuck...you jinxed it. :ohno:

Hahahaha, just trying to keep my predictions in check!
:x

10 seconds in and a Hornet foul. This is getting ridiculous. :ohno:
Ugh. 2 WSU possessions, 2 Hornet fouls. Hornets need to keep their feet.
Meh. This will get ugly fast. WSU is getting a whistle on any semblance of contact.
Garrity was just raped on the court and no whistle...then WSU gets the loose ball and a whistle immediately follows.
A foul called on WSU on a Dickson jumper!??! :o

45-43 Hornet lead just under the 16 minute media TO.

C'mon guys... Love the rotation and confidence. What a turnaround from our last pullman experience...

Hoffman...why is a catch and shoot guy getting so much dribble time?
McCarver having a solid 2nd half so far. WSU getting hot from the floor. Of course I say that and McCarver commits a moving screen for his 4th foul. 51 all about 12 minutes left.

WSU must have some mad cash. They have Guy Ferreri doing the T-shirt toss competitions.

Knowing the game is a little too close for comfort, the Hornets are called for a foul away from the ball.
Jackson called for his 4th foul.

Gotta love the whistle for a foul after a WSU shot clanks off the rim. MCCarver fouled out. The shots that were falling for the Hornets in the 1st half just arent falling in the second.

Another Hoffman turnover. 61-53 WSU with under 8 minutes left. WSU has firm control of the game now but the Hornets are still battling.

The WSU "Cougar" mascot is named "Butch".

No Rak in the second half so far. WSU opens up a 65-55 lead with under 6 minutes to go.
74-62 WSU lead under 3 minutes left.

Hornet alert, Groom sighting!!!

79-68 WSU final. Great game by the Hornets. There is no reason to hang their heads after this one. One thing is for sure, the Hornets need to stay out of foul trouble. The talent drop off from Garrity, Eberhard, and Jackson to Hoffman, Damallevile, and Groom is HUGE. Veteto didn't play. Rak didn't see much time in the second half after what I thought was his best half of basketball ever. Great effort in this game but the Hornets will always lose when they have to battle a talented Pac-12 program and the refs in the same game. The Hornets play this well for a full 40 minutes against BSC level opponents and they will win quite a few games.

Game is over. Bad calls totally took our mo away. There is no moral victory in this. We can easily beat Wazzu. Just getting jobbed. Eberhard is an absolute stud...double double. Garrity has 12 assists on a PAC-10 school!!!! Unreal.

As much as I hate moral victories, one can definitely be found in this one. The refs completely changed the outlook of this game. Hell of a game Hornets. :thumb:

For me, this is a more impressive performance than the win against OSU (in hoops, love that I have to be specific). This team looked so much better tonight than they did when I saw them play in the exhibition and against Menlo.

Garitty is a 4-year starter and difference maker at PG. Even better than I would thought.

Too bad Eberhard only has two years of eligibility.

McCarver, way to sack up.

Dickson, efficient smart play. I liked it.

REFS, GO F&%$ yourself.

I was able to catch the 2nd half of the game tonight on the link provided. When watched Wazzu game against Gonzaga the other night, I thought the Hornets were going to get blown out. I thought they put up a very good effort tonight against a Pac-12 school. There is a lot of upside to this team. The way they ran the offense was much better than the other couple of games I have caught. Garrity looks like a solid pick-up. Dickson and Eberhard looked good. I am looking forward to seeing how this team jells throughout the year.

Without Veteto, Carbajal and Estrada playing 1 minute, I'm cautiously excited! Could be a fun year.
I didn't see any of the game but, from the comments about Hoffman having to handle the ball a lot, I believe Estrada missing was huge. He can handle and is tougher than you know what.

Get those injuries healed, quickly!!!

Great effort shorthanded. Veteto, Estrada, and Carbajal out with injuries. Hopefully they will be available on Tuesday at UC Davis. Garrity and Eberhard as well as Estrada add a lot of poise and confidence to this years team.

Agreed about Veteto and Estrada. Carbajal...meh. Sadly, that kid is a turnover machine. I would love to see him turn it around, but I think the recent additions to the roster have better athleticism, b-ball IQ, ball handling and shooting skills. Carbajal might be "Groomed" after the way Garrity, Eberhard, Jackson, and Estrada have been performing in the backcourt. :twocents:
