John Leilua from Spanish Fork chose Weber State over Utah State and BYU.
"OGDEN -- Weber State head football coach Jay Hill’s emphasis to recruit within the state of Utah is manifesting already this season, as Spanish Fork High School senior John Leilua has verbally committed to join the Wildcats next year.
“I’m going to try to bring the best I can to Weber,” said Leilua in an exclusive interview with the Standard-Examiner. “I’ll play the best I can and fill whatever roles they need me to.”
While he plays on both sides of the ball for Spanish Fork as a defensive end and fullback, Leilua will work under Weber State defensive coordinator Justin Ena.
Weber State wasn’t the only school knocking on Leilua’s door. Other in-state schools such as BYU and Utah State also expressed interest, but it was Weber State’s coaching staff that made the difference.
“That’s what it came down to,” said Leilua of Weber State coaches. “Coach Ena’s a great coach, Coach Hill’s a great a coach. I’ve heard so many good things about them.”
Leilua’s relationship with Ena started much earlier than the recruiting process, which was another factor is making his decision, as well as possibly adding a little wood to the fire of the rivalry between Weber State and Southern Utah.
“Coach Ena took care of me when I went down to SUU my sophomore year for their camp,” said Leilua. “I think it’s a really great program. They have great coaches up there. They showed great interest in me, so I think that’s where I’m going to be heading.”
Another reason for the 6-foot 3, 236 pound senior coming to Weber is his friend, and freshman standout Emmett Tela, who Leilua met a year ago after playing against him.
“He’s been doing really well as a freshman this year,” said Leilua of Tela. “I’m just hoping to be able to go out there, start off young and see what we can do.”
With his decision now behind him Leilua says that on top of knowing what’s in store for him after high school, it’s a financial relief to be going to Weber State with a scholarship.
“It’s a lot nicer, I have somewhere to go on the next level,” said Leilua. “It kind of keeps me calm with all the finances and stuff.”
Leilua not only knows where he’s going to play football on the collegiate level, but he’s also sure of what he’s going to study, and where he wants to be after college.
“I’m going to get into criminal justice and psychology,” said Leilua. “I’m going to try to get into the ICE program ... Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
When he’s not on the field, Leilua enjoys studying for school, church activities, and spending time with his family -- especially fishing at Strawberry Reservoir.
While he admittedly hasn’t been paying too close attention to the Wildcats so far this season, he is planning to see the team in action this week.
“I’m going to come up to their homecoming game, so I’m excited for that,” he said.
The ’Cats take on Cal Poly in hopes to get their first win of the season at the homecoming game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stewart Stadium."
