Matt Carlino leaving BYU

Ok, my post earlier was a mean April Fools joke about coach Rahe going to Cal. UGGHH, that would suck if true, but funny though right? lol. This is for real. Here is the link from KSL. They even mention Weber State as a possible place in the comments. Personally I like Carlino. He is very streaky but when he is on he is really really good. He does miss a lot and takes bad shots. How would you feel about him playing for us for one year? I would really like it actually and would think he would fit in nice with our returning core guys. I have heard Carlino is a good guy and teammate. I wonder if he hates the honor code. I know he is not LDS. Anyway this is real and not a April fools joke unless KSL is the prankster and I fell for it. ha ha

Carlino is a ball hog and thinks he can be Jimmer Jr. NO THANKS.
Oh and the next time Carlino plays any defense will be the FIRST time he plays any defense. He is transferring because he is butt-hurt about not being a starter anymore in Provo.
I dont want ANY BYU rejects on this WSU team. :twocents:

BYU had 14 players and 13 scholarships. Someone had to go. It turned out to be him. I guess he was the 13th guy. ISU or UVSU might be good places for him. He would be the slowest guy on our team. I'm not saying never, but it is unlikely. :twocents:

From the article: "Carlino ends his BYU career 27th in scoring, with 1,201 points; his 427 assists rank 7th all-time, while his 161 steals are 6th-most at BYU.

Carlino's steals-per-game average of 1.68 is 2nd all-time at BYU, and his assists-per-game rate of 4.55 ranks 3rd. He ranks 5th in three-pointers attempted and 6th in three-pointers made.

Carlino averaged 12.2 points and 4.6 assists as a freshman in 2010-11, while earning All-WCC honorable mention honors.

As a sophomore in 2012-13, Carlino averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 assists and 1.8 steals.

During his junior season of 2013-14, Carlino averaged a career-best 13.7 points to go with 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals; he was named an All-WCC honorable mention..."

He could help we will be very young (not green though) next year.

Carlino is a team killer. He hurt BYU this year with his lack of defense and shot selection. It took a lot for Rose to finally bench him!

When you have a young team on the floor he is the last guy you'd want to lead! Let him stay at BYU...?. He can help us more if he DIDN'T transfer!

Let Rahe stick to his plan....

Maybe, out of high school, but not as a one and done senior. If we had him since HS, he would be a much different player, and more valuable, by now. With one year of eligibility, he needs to go somewhere that is in need of a quick fix. That is not Weber State.

Really, he should think about ISU, SUU, or UVSU. One of those would fit the bill. :thumb: :thumb:

Where did it say that Weber State was an option? He went from UCLA to BYU...I'm thinking that Carlino isn't thinking about Weber State as an option. If he is, then he has good taste. :thumb:

No he isn't the greatest defender, but he is really solid on the offensive end and plays a position that could really help out the Cats. He isn't a poor defender and under Rahe's tutelage could really improve from a mediocre defender into a good defender, and we know he could become better on the offensive side as well. Rahe is a genius in helping players learn about shot selection and offensive movement. I think he would flourish under Rahe.

I know most of us don't like him because he is coming from BYU. Not saying that is a bad reason to dislike him, just saying it is a bit short-sighted. I would much rather have him than a JC or low level high school player. He has DI experience, has played in a tough conference, has been successful as a DI player and can learn a system pretty quick. Rose's system at BYU isn't easy. I say...if he is interested, come on in.

Jefferson, due to breaking his hand, might really benefit from a red-shirt to help him make the transition. Also, Carlino could really help our younger guys develop and understand the college game more fully. To me this would be a win win. He though, I suspect, is mostly likely looking for "bigger" programs.

I'm with WSUCatfan on this one. THOSE STATS OF HIS ARE PRETTY IMPRESSIVE coming from BYU. BYU is an extremely strong basketball school. Has had lots of success and he has solidified himself among the best to come from the Y.

why the hate on this player who is transferring? we dont even know why he left. he sounds like a good player from the stats i read from wsucatfan.

i have read on the forum of this guy and 3 usu tranfers. are any on weber's radar? i am not aware of any players from usu or byu to transfer to weber.....at least not in the past 10 yrs. we have seen a few utes though.

Ryan Cuff is the last BYU player to transfer to Weber State. He was pretty damn good from what I remember. One of the top 50 players in Weber State history!!

One thing to remember is that per NCAA rules, Carlino can only transfer to a school that offers a Masters Program that BYU does NOT offer.

I don't hate the guy. I'm not sure that he could start for us, but he wouldn't hurt us in any way. If he came here, we would have a full year to recruit his replacement and probably end up with a better player the following year. That might be the biggest plus of all. :twocents:

Is that a rule about transferring? You have to pick a school that has a Masters program that your current school doesn't? I read on the KSL comments from random fans about Weber State being a possible place for him. I have not read anything specific about schools Matt is looking at. I think Matt is looking at high major schools, so I doubt he would come here, but you never know. I personally would love to have him for a year. He is a high risk high reward player. I have seen games where he was flat out awesome and others where he couldn't hit sand if he fell off a camel. I have never read or seen where attitude was an issue for Matt. You could tell he was not happy about coming off the bench, but he still played hard and was a good teammate. He graduated from BYU so he is not dumb. For the reasons that Tal mentioned above I would love to have Matt join us for a year. I do think whoever we add for next season, that I would love to see a scoring combo guard. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Actually NO, but nice try WeberSki.

All of this will work itself out within the next week. Spring signing begins next Wednesday. I still think that we will bring in a JC power forward with three years of eligibility left. :thumb:

I doubt that Weber State has a Masters program that BYU doesn't have. EHhh. No big deal. I'm going to guess he ends up back at UCLA where he started.
