Returning to coach LBs. Also, Jared Ursua from SUU hired to coach WRs.

Wasn't Hammer OC before and has been coaching at Weber High or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes...Hammer was the OC at one time. I'm all for having Hammer come back to be the LBs coach. Matt is a great guy and he has really grown as a coach while at Weber High. He was very very close to becoming the HC when John L. left. So, he knows his stuff. One of my best buds played receiver when he was coaching here a decade ago, and he thinks the world of Hammer. He is a great recruiter, solid position coach, and like Swan, ready for any challenge. Being a defensive coach will be great for him.

What LB wouldn't like to be coached by a guy named MATT HAMMER.

Hammer Mill
Hammer Time
Sledge Hammers

When you are a Hammer, everything on the other side of the line looks like a nail.

Bring it!

As long as he doesn't get to call any offensive plays... LB coach should be ok.

Those were my thoughts. His play calling wasn't always popular when he was OC.

Extreme understatement.

That's what I thought and where I was going with it. I remember not being a fan of his offense to say the least. He was able to turn the WHS program into something pretty good.

Sometimes, coaching is about perspective. Having gone down and coached at the HS level for several years can do a lot to change one's perspective. Without the ability to recruit guys to fit your system, you must fit your system to the guys you are given. It is also a new look at player development and fitting player skills to team needs. Often, the best defensive coaches come from the offensive side of things and visa-versa. Who knows better about disrupting an offense than a guy who has had his offense disrupted.

I think these new hires are great. We have added two experienced/seasoned coaches. Love it. :thumb: :thumb:

I think this is a good hire by Coach Hill. Coach Hammer is a great recruiter, hard worker, and knowledgeable coach. He understands how to get the most out of his players and has proven an ability to develop players. However, he wasn't the most popular OC when he was here, but we have to remember two things:

1. He was Coach Mac's OC. Mac was obsessed with running the ball. That is what he wanted to do and that is what he expected Hammer to do. Under Mac, it was definitely an old school type offense of smash-mouth football. Even under McGiven, when Weber threw the ball a lot and with one of the most prolific passers in Weber State history, we still ran the ball a lot. Hence why Trevin Smith is the all time leader in rushing yards.

2. When Mac "retired" and Lucifer Smith suddenly left Hammer was put in a really bad spot. Some of our best offensive players had been chased off by Smith, the remaining players were demoralized, and the recruiting class was bare. Hammer's offense did keep us in some games that season; even though we went 2-9. Sears cut him lose because he was the most likely guy to take his spot on the coaching staff.

But, lets all face it. Regrettably, the offense hasn't really changed much since he left. We are still obsessed with running the ball, even though, under Fesi, we had some more wrinkles in our play calling than we had last year with Schramm. Like Olds said though. Having a guy who understands offenses trying to break them is a great coach to have. I feel Weber's LBs are in good hands. Now, who will end up being the Special Teams coordinator??

Agree...well stated Oldrunner. :twocents:

I think it’s a good hire. I think it’s good he has local recruiting ties and a history with Weber State. I’ll try and be patient with Schramm in his second season, but honestly, I think an upgrade was needed.

Big holes to fill on defense. It might be tough to make the playoffs again, but it seems like the new players rise to the challenge, so who knows. It’s exciting to be talking about trying to make it four consecutive years in the playoffs. Go Wildcats!
