"The Cowboys’ third-string quarterback Stephen McGee took most of the snaps in the Hall of Fame Game win over the Bengals, but it was the last man on the depth chart, Matt Nichols, who held the reins against Oakland. The undrafted rookie did not come into the game until just under five minutes remaining in the game, but those were the fastest five minutes of his football life. The Cowboys fell behind for the first time right after Nichols entered the game, and he was forced to run the hurry-up offense in the Cowboys’ first home preseason game of 2010.
The Raiders’ fourth-string quarterback Kyle Boller had just completed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Nick Miller to make the score 9-7 in Dallas’ favor when Nichols trotted onto the field at Cowboys Stadium for the first time. A short run, a shorter completion, and an incompletion resulted in a Cowboys’ three-and-out on Nichols’ first drive. The Raiders added a field goal on their ensuing possession to take a 10-9 lead. With his team trailing and only 2:24 remaining in the game, Nichols was presented with a golden opportunity to prove to the Cowboys’ coaching staff he is worth a roster spot. The Eastern Washington product completed six passes to three different receivers, including a fourth down conversion, to drive the Cowboys from their own 6-yard line to the thirty-seven. On second-and-eight with forty-two seconds to go, Nichols threw a strike to a wide open Manuel Johnson over the middle, but the ball went right through Johnson’s hands and bounced into the waiting arms of the Raiders’ Jerome Boyd, who took the interception in for a 48-yard touchdown."
