Mckay Cannon to BYU

Looks like Cannon will be a walk-on at BYU this upcoming season. If we do not land the Zag player, I would be mad that we did not keep Cannon or Gittens.

This is totally Cannon's decision. Why pay for school when you know you can get someone else to pay for your schooling?

Cannon received a waiver from the NCAA and played against UVU last night. He ended with 8pts and 6 assists. He played great off the bench (I don't see him being a starter this season, if ever at BYU but...). Good for him. I wonder how much he will play next Saturday against the Cats.

I pull for Cannon and am happy it started out good for him at the Y. They could use a good point guard off the bench with what has happened down there and Emery leaving. But ... but, they love zones, which really helps his defensive game.

Can you imagine him trying to match-up in a man with Harding (or most of the points in the Sky)? He struggled so badly defensively last year.

im glad to see him playing and succeeding. i love our program but i wish more players made it through the system all 4 years. its very rare we have more than 1-2 seniors.

All sorts of love for Cannon at the Y...saying he's just the right fit as a guard for the Cougars, (1) better than Emery?...Deseret News sports online (Cannon's H.S. coach talks) include a couple comments asking why he left Weber State? Can someone go on in & answer, in a way that makes sense, please? :coffee:

I was hoping someone who is closer to the program would take this on. And those people can also correct any of my observations.

As I recall, after a decent freshman year where Cannon showed some good skills, but not the quickness you might hope for (I've heard it referred to as RM legs), he decided not to come play summer rat ball with his teammates. I read that this was a concern to Rahe and I think it definitely showed his sophomore year, which was disappointing to me. His 3-ball was inconsistent, and he hadn't seemed to address his lack of quickness either. I had read that leaving WSU was his idea. Had John been in the lineup, he had done nothing to earn increased minutes this year. If Rahe knew that John would be out for the year, I would guess there is no way he would have let him go.

Cut to this year. He's made a reputation with this teammates through hard play during summer ball. His 3-pt shot is obviously more consistent and he's gotten great press for -- doing what he was taught at Weber. That is distributing the ball well on offense. He is playing with some heart. Something he didn't seem to have for us, whatever the reason.

Also, Emery's leaving the program was a huge boon for him as it opened up time. With Emery in the lineup, he may still be an unknown walk-on. And the Y has rethought their offense which has greater ball movement and is much less selfish. That was ideal for Cannon and his PG instincts.

I hope he does well. It's my feeling that for whatever the reason, it just didn't work for him here.

I think that everybody loved him here at Weber and was disappointed to see him come off the summer out of shape. We still expected him to work himself back into shape and continue as our starting PG. It was his job to lose. He started the year off shaky and never really got into a rhythm. He eventually did lose his starting position and then seemed to sulk a bit. He was never right after that. He didn't react well to losing his spot.

Looks to me like he has gotten himself back in shape at BYU and has a renewed enthusiasm to the game. It looks like he has lost about 10 lbs. and that and that gives him a half step more speed. I'm happy for him. He is a great young man from a great family. I wish him nothing but the best. :thumb: :thumb:

Maybe this helps (or not).

I know, the headline is just SLTrib click-bait -- the article hardly supports it. But hey, you expect it from them ...

Lost a lot of respect for Cannon. Lots of half-truths...he isn't lying, but he isn't being thoroughly honest either.
