Portland State, Geving sign first recruit

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2009/04/portland_state_geving_sign_fir.html

Melvin Jones, a sophomore guard from North Idaho College, on Wednesday signed a letter of intent with Portland State, the first signing under first-week men's basketball coach Tyler Geving.

The 5-foot-10 Jones averaged 13.2 points and 3.6 assists as a sophomore. He shot .482 on three-pointers and had an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 2 to 1 (111 to 56).

Portland State lost its starting guards from last season, Jeremiah Dominguez and Andre Murray.

"When we recruited him," Geving said in a university release, "the vision was for him to come in and make an immediate impact."

Jones is from Seattle and attended Chief Sealth High School. His addition gives the Vikings three signees for the coming season, including two incoming freshmen: Max Jacobsen, a 6-7 forward from Lake Oswego, and Chris Harriel, a 6-4 guard from King High School in Riverside, Calif.

Wednesday was the first day of the regular signing period for basketball letters of intent.

Melvin Jones Overcomes Life's Challenges To Succeed At Portland State

Nice story about Jones.

He's amazing to watch get up court with the ball. He's not to the point of a Will Funn or JD as far as a playmaker on the break, but he can get from foul line to foul line on the break faster than anyone I've ever seen in a Viking uniform.

Melvin Jones, starting point guard for Portland State who was headed for a life of crime a few years ago, will have his life story chronicled by NBC’s “Today Show.”

Only questions are...what took so long to get around to it, as evident from posting above, the incredible Melvin Jones story was on Goviks a year ago. And, what happened to the Oregonian on this? Another story from it's back yard that it totally missed.
