FOOTBALL ADDS SEVEN MIDYEAR SIGNEES

1/30/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football program has added seven transfers that each enrolled at the University for the spring semester, it was announced today. The group is comprised of running back Kenslow Smith, cornerback Jay C. Reddic, linebacker Jarred Pereira, tight end Jonathan Krebs, safety Zach Schrader, defensive lineman Matt Agaiava and kicker/punter Augie Heath.

“I feel we met a lot of our needs at the places where he had had holes to fill,” Sacramento State head coach Marshall Sperbeck said. “We’ve brought in some older, more experienced players that should be able to step in and provide an immediate impact.”

Smith comes to the Hornets after spending the past two seasons at Southwestern JC in Chula Vista, Calif. As a sophomore, he helped the team to a Mountain Conference championship and a 7-3 overall record. That season, he rushed for 956 yards and 11 touchdowns and also caught 14 passes to earn first team all-Mountain Conference honors. His average of 95.6 yards per game ranked 16th in the state and he left Southwestern as the school’s all-time leader in career touchdowns with 18.

A local product, Reddic played the past two seasons at American River JC in Sacramento. A two-time all-Mid-Empire Conference selection, Reddic led the state with 21 pass break-ups as a sophomore. He also finished with 28 total tackles, including three for loss, and had two interceptions. As a freshman, Reddic had five interceptions and 13 PBUs. Reddic graduated from Cordova High School in 2005 and was a two-time all-Sierra Valley Conference selection for the Lancers.

Pereira most recently starred at Santa Rosa JC in 2008. As a middle linebacker, he was named first team all-NorCal Conference after finishing eighth in the state with 90 tackles. The 6-0, 245-poinder also added 9.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack, one interception, forced one fumble, and recovered two fumbles. He twice tallied 15 tackles in a game during the season and served as a team captain. Pereira also shines in the weight room where he bench presses 450 pounds and squats 565 pounds.

Another Northern California native, Krebs hails from Galt, Calif., and played two seasons at Sacramento City JC. In 2008, he led the team with 38 receptions while playing tight end and slot receiver. The 6-foot-4 target was also named first team all-Mid-Empire Conference and helped the team to a pair of conference championships while playing for former Hornet head coach Mike Clemons.

Schrader spent his first two collegiate seasons at Western Washington where he was an all-Great Northwest Athletic Conference second team selection in 2008. As a sophomore, he ranked second on the team with 76 total tackles and was named the Vikings’ Defensive Player of the Year. He also had four interceptions, was credited with four pass break-ups, recovered one fumble and forced a fumble. As a freshman, Schrader recorded 24 tackles and an interception in six games. Despite transferring from Div. II, Schrader will be immediately eligible for the Hornets due to the fact that Western Washington discontinued its football program in January.

Agaiava will add to a defensive line which returns eight players from a year ago. The 6-foot-1, 290-pounder will play on the interior of the line. In two years at Cerritos JC, Agaiava tallied 52 total tackles, including 6.5 tackles-for-loss and five sacks.

Heath is the only incoming player not coming in as a junior (the others will all be juniors). The Chico, Calif., native played one year at Butte JC and helped the Roadrunners to the national title with a 12-0 record. He averaged 38.5 yards per punt and placed 15 punts inside the 20-yard line. As a kicker, he converted on 10-of-14 field goals with a long of 42 yards.

Sacramento State finished the 2008 season with a 6-6 overall record and returns nine offensive starters and seven defensive starters from a year ago. The team opens spring practice on April 8 with the spring game taking place on May 2.
