Anyone here have anything to say about Coach Burns? I see where he was head coach at EWU for 3 years and then went to a JC head coach job before moving to University of San Diego as an asst. Seems like a circuitous path to take. His record wasn't that bad at EWU and he had a good record in JC after his stint in Cheney. Just doesn't make a lot of sense......

Not a good fit here...and if memory serves me he had pretty good teams and didn't fair too well.

Burns had Rodney Stuckey playing for him at Eastern, and still wasn't that successful. He was fired and encouraged all his EWU players to transfer, which made it difficult for new coach Kirk Earlywine. His friends at Gonzaga got him the job at Spokane Community College for a year, and then as an assistant to ex-Zag Billy Grier at San Diego (Grier was fired this year, and the coaching fraternity found him another assistant job?). He was a nice guy but D1 head coaching material??

Transfers were not Earlywine's only or biggest problems. Spirits and poor recruiting were top of the list.
Burns was not ready for HC job at Eastern. I hope he gets a second chance?

Either you have a bad memory Ron or maybe you have an axe to grind? Had he been brought back for his fifth season, Earlywine's top 7 players would have been Colimon, Ederaine, Tremayne Johnson, Forbes, Griffin, Dean and Winford ... that team would have easily been top three in the Big Sky for sure, probably top two. Not sure you can call that poor recruiting.

No Axe, just observation! Win or lose in his fifth year, with this coaching change EWU basketball is in much better shape. The fan interest and attendance shows that this was the correct move.

Earlywine was Bobby Knight of the big sky without the skill level. Best move made by the basketball program ever!
