NAU forces OT in Flagstaff, only to loose on very controversial out-of-bounds call. Nobody wins when Big Sky officials can play a role in the outcome of a game.

I was watching it and live I thought he stepped out too, the replay looks like he touched the line too. Sucks for the Jacks but the pick in the endzone a terrible play, doubled up the qb should have thrown it through the uprights. 1 and goal from the 3 and you can't punch it in?

I was at the game, saw the play, and watched it over and over again on the big screen replay. The OOB call could have gone either way.

Big Sky officials are better than most and made far fewer mistakes in the UM-NAU game than either the players or the coaches!

Big Sky officials preserve Fizz win. What a joke, the Big Sky should be proud...

There was more than one bad call during the day, but it appeared to me (though a Griz fan) that the guy stepped out at the 2.

Anyway, the line judge appeared to be right there and made the call he thought was right. Out of bounds is pretty clear cut, it ISN'T a judgement call like most penalties are. It is clear cut. If the player hits the line, he is out. The ref saw that he hit the line and called it that way. What is he supposed to do, say he is in, just because it is OT.
Plus, had the ref not called the player out, it isn't as if that ment that NAU would have won, it only ment it was PAT or 2 PT conversion time... And possibly another OT.
I didn't think the refs injected themselves in the game as they sometimes do.
With that out of the way, congrats to a close win over PSU. It just goes to show you a couple of things, first, Weber is starting to get some small notion of what it is like to have a target on your back, to feel the benefits of having a team that finds ways to win because of a winning attitude, and also to make a point I've tried to make with Griz fans forever; It is impossible for a team to play at their highest level EVERY single week, week in and week out.

By the way, Welcome to all the newbies who are posting here this year. It's great to have you onboard!

N.OgdenCat is a very passionate guy. He has a tendancy to overreact at times... No matter, NAU had the ball on the 2 with 1st and goal, they had four chances to get into the endzone. The refs didn't cause the TO. What was NAU thinking with that play call, and more importantly, WTF was the NAU QB thinking when he threw in double, or was it triple coverage? They had their chance and blew it. Can't blame the refs.

i was just reading and i figured i would let you know the reasoning behind the fumble call.

Ncaa rules say: during a fumble if a player (O or D) has stepped out of bounds on the play....he must re establish contact in bounds, by making contact with both feet inbounds before coming in contact with the football. The griz player was out of bounds... jumped back in bounds with both feet, before touching the ball.

( It is different, than the rule during a pass play or a hand-off. which is you cant be the first to touch the ball after being out of bounds.....unless being forced out by the opposing team)

and yea NAU QB...shit the bed when it came to throwing into triple coverage.

BTW officials for games are not just Big Sky Conference officials. Conferences are joining together to use a pool of officials for basketball and for football. The Mountain West, WAC, and Big 10 are using one pool of refs, while the Big Sky and the PAC10 are using a different pool of refs. So, Refs work all of the conferences in the pool. I am in nowise saying that because they also call PAC 10 games they are better refs. Don't forget that awesome call in the BYU - Washington game last year and the Oklahoma - Oregon game a couple of years ago.
