Montana State

Bobcats coming to town on Saturday after getting their first road win of the season tonight at Sacramento State. Viks looking to get the sweep of the Montana schools and have lost only one game at home. Currently there are five teams with two or fewer conference losses and Portland State has now beaten two of those (North Dakota and Montana). Viks cannot overlook MSU however. They have to win this. Do not lose the momentum created by the great win over Montana.

Dear Viking Men's Basketball Team,

Please, please, make your free throws!

Very truly yours,
Alan

Wishful thinking, I know. Halftime 35-35 tie, mainly due to the missed free throws. Just have to concentrate and make them.

We were 16 for 28 from the line. Mon Dieu, we lose by 6 and 28 times we were given an uncontested 15 foot shot and we missed it 12 times. How can it be that the Viking women are so much better a the free throw line? What is it, better coaching, more practice, better attitude?

Well that was pretty damn disappointing last night.

Some comments:

- Free throws. This is insanity. We air balled one last night. Sums it all up.

- Is it me or does Geving get into this point in the season and get down to a super small rotation? I get it that the BSC is a guard heavy conference, and I’m not saying act like it’s 1989 and throw in the traditional C, F, F, G, G lineup, but other than the six minutes by Hollins, that was a six man rotation last night. I noticed Zach sat late in the second half until about four minutes or so to go. Not sure if he’s under the weather or something since he only played 28 minutes, but it seemed like Geving was trying to rest him until the last handful of minutes in the game. Aw heck, it’s so easy to Sunday morning coach. :-\

- Does Robinson have carte blanche to toss up a three from anywhere on the court? I swear that one in the first half must have been from 28’ and the only guy I’ve seen that can knock down 28’ threes in the Stott Center goes by the name of Damian Lillard.

- I’ve noted a trend of lazy, not so crisp out top passes on offense that either result in a turnover or sort of disrupt the offensive set. We’re pretty good on defense at eyeing the passing lanes up top, so you’d think this wouldn’t be an issue.

- Our rebounding sucked last night. We don’t have too much size with our guard heavy lineups, but if you have three PSU guys and one MSU guy at or near the basket and the MSU guy grabs the board and scores with no problem, we’re not playing basketball correctly. On the other end of the court, we have guys near the hoop that aren’t even thinking about a rebound when the shot goes up.

What an absolutely crappy way to go into a week off in the schedule. Could be 5-2 fighting near the top of the conference, but nope, we’re 4-3 and sliding into the middle of the pack.

We can live with being bad in one area (free throws) as long as we are really good in the other areas. Last night rebounding was a big issue. Montana State is just as athletic as we are (the Bobcats are the only conference team I've seen that can match our athleticism) so we needed to secure the rebounds, and we didn't. Most conference games we can rely on being more athletic that the opponent, but it doesn't work when they are just as athletic as we are.

Oh, let's see, Mike Riley was better the second time around in Corvallis?

A new coach... I'd say the need is becoming obvious. Recycling? Can we show some creativity instead? This is where a new building should actually be a selling point and some assistant at a bigger program might actually find some interest in coming here. PSU may not get, oh, Terry Porter, but don't have to.
