Montana-Western

Clearly this is not a high-profile opponent, but these guys are a competent opponent. They clobbered Montana Tech this weekend 38-6 (and Tech is usually a credible bellwether at that level). They led 35-0 at halftime and pulled their starters shortly thereafter.

No one gets too excited for an NAIA team, but the truth is these guys would be competitive against the bottom tier of the FCS. Although it didn't happen in my lifetime, Western Montana has beaten Eastern once before in 8 tries.

My hope would be to see Eastern really work on locking down defensively. This is a team we have to hold to 10 points or under, and based on the way the D looked on Saturday, that's probably going to require a bit of improvement. We can't let any quality offense explode for 500 or more yards.. No one wins titles that way. We've got to show the ability to shut down a halfway decent offense, and this team represents that.

Good points LDopaPDX. The EAGS need to come into this game with a mindset no different than any other game. There is plenty of room for improvement. I think the EAGS will come out focused and take care of business.

Let's put SHSU talk to bed.
Time to get amped for the Western Bulldogs coming to Cheney.

I think it's important that Athletics and boosters see a good turnout for the game. And I think it's important that the team feels it from the crowd because I'm sure it's going to be hard to not still be playing off of emotions from the opener and looking ahead to UW.

And I trust that the coaching staff will get the players in the right mind set.

So, that said, hopefully it's a sharp and effective first half with LOTS of time in the 2nd half to get reps for the reserves. I personally don't want to see Vernon playing much in the second half as I'd like to see as healthy as possible and well rested for UW.

Normally I'd say let's get a big lead and get the 2's and 3's in early in a game like this. But with how "off" our timing seemed to be on Saturday I'd like to see the starters in for at least a half to work that stuff out.

I watched Montana Western's game with Montana Tech and if this game is not over by the 2nd quarter, the coaches should be doing conditioning drills with the team. Montana Western is a very good NAIA team but the difference in size and speed is very obvious.

Yeah, aside from our defense demonstrating they can physically overmatch an opponent, I think showing killer instinct will be the other thing to look for. We dicked around with Western Oregon and Weber State last year; both of whom we shoulda beat by 50+. I'd like to see Eastern hit the field full throttle and get the early KO.
