Montana

i will miss wayne. there is no school we can count on to be good every year now. i really enojyed the wayne yrs and giacoletti yrs.

Good coaches are hard to keep in a league obsessed with football. Wayne left because Montana didn't want to support the basketball program more. He wasn't interested in his own salary as much as he was interested in the university of montana improving facilities, paying his assistants more, and helping the basketball program. I don't get it. Isn't going to the Big Dance far more important than FCS playoffs. I mean, getting destroyed by Syracuse is better than losing to Coastal Carolina right?

Not in my book. I'm a basketball first fan, but I'll take FCS playoffs (and throw in a few FCS championships) over having the country question your D1 basketball status, every time.

You obviously don't know Wayne. Wayne left because his son wanted to play for him, but his son could not turn down Pac-12 offers. Wayne has stated a few times he would love to come back to UM one day. He also saw a pay check increase by 300%. To say Montana doesn't care about basketball is silly. Montana upgraded quite a few pieces of dahlberg arena this year. Also Montana is working quite hard to bring back what used to be a very strong basketball tradition. Coach D is a new generation coach and players love him. UM has multiple upgrades for basketball in mind. And you also very wrong if you think going deep into the FCS playoffs is not better than a first round loss in the ncaa tourney. Montana's fan base is as big as it is now because of football success, not by being a top 100 basketball team.

Hate to break this to you, but yes, I do know Wayne. But you do make some great comments that I definitely, grudgingly , have to agree with you on. We will see how your new coach does. So far he has done alright, but he is using Wayne's kids. What do you think about Saturday's game.

Wayne made some very good friends in Ogden.

It's simply amazing how many griz basketball fans are in the dark about what really went down with Tinkle leaving UM. Wayne Tinkle left Montana with a very bad taste.

FCS is a joke outside of Montana. Does anybody even know who won the fcs NC this year? I don't.
Montana football fan base is large because of 2 things,, and being the only game in town, or the entire State for that matter.

Like girls basketball? Just because you could care less about something doesn't mean nobody else cares.

the FCS NC game hasn't happened yet, but North Dakota St. (Weber's home opener) could make it 4 in a row-- that's outside of Montana, and I doubt a joke to those in and around North Dakota.

You're so right! I just checked and the National Championship is Saturday and will be televised on ESPN 2.

It is a very big deal.. In North Dakota (part of the big 3), and in Missoula, Flathead Lake, & Kalispell.

So... I'm a Montana grad ('73 & '88) and a longtime Grizzly Basketball (not football) fan. I drop by occasionally & read the threads here because I love any kind of hoops info.

The above statement by Weberski finally prompted me to join & comment. If "ski" is who I think he is over at the Griz hoops board, he's oft repeated the "insider's secret about why Wayne Tinkle left Montana with such a bad taste."

I'm no Griz insider but I do know Tinkle and consider him the greatest of a group of truly great coaches to serve at Montana... because of what he accomplished, litle more. Tinkle told me on several occasions that he'd move on "when the time was right." Nothing more. Nothing less. He truly earned the opportunity & pay at Oregon State. I believe him. I wish him the best.

If WeberSki has some true insider's info about Tinkle that's so shocking, why not share it & document it?

As a Griz fan, I'll be honest over here: There's no hoops team I'd rather see the Griz beat than the Wildcats. That said, there's no team or program I respect more highly than the Wildcats of Weber State. Plus, you truly have the dean of Big Sky coaches in Randy Rahe. Treat him well... or he might -- as ski furtively hints about Tinkle -- be gone in a twinkle. With rancor.

Now, I have a secret about your town. I'll share it. Did you know that the very BEST high end audio speakers in the world (this can be proven) are made by a small company in Ogden? True. I own an "Essential" pair. They're made by a company called Zu and they're located in the Ogden Commercial Industrial Park. Check em out.

One other confession. I've become a Portland Trailblazers fan because I identify with Damian Lilliard through Big Sky basketball. Not envy really, just a kind of Big Sky pride... the same kind I had when Larry K made it. Or the pride I have that an all conference point guard from the early nineties (Travis DeCuire) is now the coach of the Griz and (I think) has the potential to be a good one.

Otherwise, I'm looking forward to Montana's trip to Ogden on Thursday, with the hopes that the Griz can eke out their first conference win in Ogden since... uh, about 2003. (Yikes.) Go Griz.

The rivalry between UM and WSU is really a good one in basketball, and has been since the beginning of the BSC. UM has had some great coaches and so has WSU; players as well. Out of all of the teams in the Sky, UM has the best record against us. In football, it is not close, UM has dominated us.

This should be a good game tomorrow night. I am the first to admit my total bias, but I do believe that we will win on our home floor. It could be different at UM. Road wins will be hard to come by this year, for any team.

I'm not sure why this is scheduled for Thursday and not Saturday. The BSC scheduler has their head up somewhere that it shouldn't be. I'm still hoping for a good crowd and a good turnout of students. :coffee:

Students are trying to get back. Class doesn't start until Monday and the dorms open this weekend! You're right, the scheduling is bogus.

we are playing griz on a thurs and school is still out? that sucks. the schedule sucks this year. the first half is brutal. i hope we can survive since the finish will be a beauty with 5 of 7 in ogden!

Only ? In this game is how Montana shoots. If we have a decent fg% percentage we win. Martin will score about 20 and Gregory 15. But its all about if the others shoot well. We will either win or lose big. Of WSU d steps up..it could be a long night for us.

I've been waiting for Wildcat to announce Game Day, but I just can't wait any longer. Yikes, it feels like is has been forever since I stepped into the Dee.

Weber vs. Montana 2015 Version
This has been quite the rivalry over the past few seasons and I expect it to continue this season too. A lot of people, including me, had Montana down this season. No one expected Bruening to be as good as he has been so far this season. Of course, we all knew that Jordan Gregory would have a great season. I am a bit surprised by Mario Dunn. Seems like he is having a slight sophomore slump on offense, but he has continued his defensive development. He might be the top defensive guard in the conference. Not having Weisner available could hurt the Griz, but they didn't really miss him too much last week in two home wins.

To me the biggest battles will be between Gregory and Gittens and Bruening and Bolomboy. If Weisner plays he will, most likely, be matched up against Hill. Starting small might not be a bad option for the Cats, but I'd rather see Hajek matched up against Bruening to start things out. Bolomoboy got pushed around all over the floor against Eastern, but once Rahe brought in Hajek Jois was limited and it became the Tyler Harvey show (that is going to happen quite a bit over the next couple of seasons). I've read that Bruening's game is very similar to Jois's game. I think it might be a good option to start the game with Hajek matching up with Bruening. If Weisner isn't available, the Cats would have a significant size advantage and thankfully, finally, a rebounding advantage. The Griz have 6-7 Chris Kemp as their next biggest player and he isn't the quickest guy on the court for them. Weisner is a talented big, but plays more like a shooting forward and hasn't really ever been known for his inside offense and rebounding. I like having either Kemp or Weisner having to match Bolomboy if Hajek is in the game. One major factor to helping open up Bolomboy is for James to hit some shots. I wish Bolomboy could pass out of double teams better. A nice bounce pass to Hajek in the lane would be pretty sweet. Oh, how I wish we could have Mook back sometimes.
