Most Successful Teams

What characteristics made our best teams successful?? I was really worried about this years team because of the lack of height, but the more research I've done the more I've come to find out that some of Webers best teams were smaller and quicker... in 1995 and 1998 the starting centers were both 6-7 Andy Smith 1995 and Andy Jensen 1998. This seasons team might be shorter, but they are going to be very quick and it looks like they are going to be great shooters. What other aspects made our teams good??

Ruben Nembhard, Eddie Gill, Jermaine Boyette. The key for WSU is an exceptional point guard that can score and get his team mates going.

I agree...

All our greatest teams had very good point guards...although we are sounding like the NBA! lol Seems like thats all they talk about now is how good everyones point guards are...what happened to centers?

Mark Matos was very good in the early 80's. He is the assist king in Weber history...a true point guard much like Eddie Gill, Jermaine on the other hand was basically a point-post, I like to think jermaine is the best point guard in school history because he did it all. He didn't have a Harold so he was basically Harold and Eddie combined.

Jermaine could get assists and 20 pts a game and also great D stealing the ball.

Matos had a big man he played with make it to the NBA - Tom Heywood. Not sure if Matos played with our 3 NBA selections from 1980?

From this decade...Jamal was our worst point, Stovall was pretty good but didn't have a good team, he was a great FT shooter too.

Van Brock was solid/dependable and had good D, I think Midge taking over for '08-'09 might be better though...who will be the next point man after McCoy? Lillard, Dent, Cottle?

As for the most unsuccessful teams...this decade

I would go with 2000, 2004, & 2005 even though 2006 was one of the worst 8 records in WSU's 45 year Div I history.

2000 was Harold/Eddie's senior year also the same year Cravens took over. Harold was also the Big Sky MVP that yr.

2004 was Slob, Sparrow, & Hamilton's senior yr & Lance's junior yr.

2005 was Lance's senior yr and Stovall's junior year...Riggs shoulda been a lot better than he was.

2000, 2004, & 2005 had a few similarities, 2000 & 2005 had a good point guard and a good big man, 2004 just had multiple good players. '05's team had Stovall (sadly he split time with Jamal) and Lance Allred. Lance was the best big man in the conference and one of the top 3 rebounders in the nation yet they finished only 7-7 in conference play despite losing the conf tourney championship game by 2 points.

The '04 team was loaded enough that they shoulda won no matter what.

Stovall ranks in the Big Sky record books for free throw shooting.

Those teams should have easily won it all. Did Cravens do something wrong? I can't see Rahe not finishing in the top 2 if he had the talent of those teams.

If I remember correctly 2000 team finished 3rd, 2004 finished 3rd/4th, and 2005 finished 5th.

I think besides 2000, 2004, & 2005 winning it all, I also think 2002 shoulda been champs. Seems like we have had some good teams during the Cravens era that didn't live up to their potential...then again almost every year WSU can compete for a title which we are lucky for that.

2002 we had 1st team players - Jermaine Boyette (Jr) & Chris Woods (Sr). We also had Johnny Hamilton (Soph), Nick Sparrow (Soph), Stevie Morrison (Jr), Stephan Bachman (Jr).

2004 we had 1st team players Slobodan Okociljic (Sr) & I think Nick Sparrow (Sr). We also had Johnny Hamilton (Sr)

2005 1st team Lance Allred.

I can't quite remember but I think Sparrow was a first teamer in '03 or '04. I know he wasn't a 1st team both years, only Slob was. Was Johnny ever a 1st teamer?

I definitely agree... All of Weber's most successful teams had a a great point guard! However, it was a big man that really put Weber on the map, WILLIE! And don't forget the likes of Stan Mayhew, Gene Visscher, Tom Heywood and of course Lance Allred. To bad Lance had to play on a Craven's team: GREAT TALENT, but no chemistry.
I'd have to say Webers worst teams were in 1987 and 88, and 2006. I went up to ISU for the last game of Craven's career here at the WSU and I've never been so embarrashed. Weber got thrashed and ISU's ex-AD (Classless Bub) called my buddies and I some choice words (that believe it or not was the highlight of the game). Even though Craven's was an average coach nothing can take away from that incredible 2003 team (I can still hear the crowd chanting 17 straight: GREAT SEASON) Cravens actually jumped in the crowd after a road win at MSU (we took two buses of students and fans up to Bozeman, incredible year to be a student). I'm glad that I was a student during one of Weber's most successful years.
I'd also have to say anytime that Weber wins the Oqquier Bucket (I have no idea if I spelled that right) is a great year! Big Sky Championships and NCAA Berths are the best; however, the bucket is next!
Along with great point guards, I think reserves and role players are extremely important. In 1998 Eric Ketcham and Damien Baskerville, not to mention Jensen, Jackson, and Lawson, and in 1995 Lewis Lofton and Andy Smith... Awesome!

how can u out rebound Sojourner as a guard?

Bruce Collins was 6'5"... He averaged 7.4 RPG and 16.4 PPG for his career at Weber... He played four seasons. Jimmie Watts and Richard Smith were both great big men though...

Al Hamilton was one of the greatest players to ever touch the hardwood of the DEE! He, along with Coach A, revived WSU Basketball. I remember how electric of a player he was and how he could dominate a game offensively and defensively. Shawn Campbell is one of the greats, there is no doubt about that!
Who are some of Weber's best Sixth men, or role players. I'm going for Eric Ketcham and Dave Webber.
