Mountain West invites Fresno and Nevada, WAC implications?

Out of the blue conference realignment is back. Today BYU has made its intentions to go indy (football), and join WAC or another conference for all other sports. The Mountain West officially invited Fresno and Nevada. This leaves the WAC football conference with 7 teams and if BYU does for some reason join the WAC, 8 teams in all other sports. I think these moves are going to cause LA Tech to bolt the conference for sure. As opposed as their fans are to the Sun Belt, it makes total sense, especially in the WAC's battered state.

Does this finally open the door for us? I know Northern Texas, Texas State, UTSA and Montana will all be in the mix.

ESPN is reporting Fresno is intending on turning down invitation. Also, it seems the WAC may have invited UNLV and San Diego State

Doesn't do anything as far as Sac State is concerned. The school has has not publicly stated any desire to go up a division, nor have they announced any definitive plan/goal to expand the current facilities.

Sac State will not be invited anywhere with the current Hornets Nest and grandstand football stadium. It will take five years to gain approval and build if money fell from the sky today.

The MWC is nothing w/o BYU. I mean look at Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force, New Mexico all schools that have limited media and general fan interest.

According to the Fresno Bee, they are going to accept the offer tonight.

If Nevada and Fresno State leave to the MWC, do we really want to be in the WAC? It would be the FBS equivalent to the Big Sky in regards to travel and teams no one locally would pay to see.

The MWC can kiss any dream of a BCS invite good-bye. They are now on the same level as the WAC imo.

It will cost any team leaving the WAC $5 million dollars. Unless Nevada and Fresno STate come up with $5 million each, they arent going anywhere for five years!

With that kind of a payout needed, I doubt any school can afford that...unless some private donors step it up big time.

I think if given a invite we would still move up without Fresno State and Nevada in the WAC.
One reason for my logic is. If we don't go now we will have missed our window for quite sometime.

The WAC will need football members now. They will only have Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State ,San Jose State ,Hawaii, Idaho and Utah State. But if they added Cal Poly, UC Davis, and Montana with Sac State. I think that's a better league than the BIG SKY anyday. We would draw fans for the Cal Poly, UCFE, Hawaii and possibly San Jose State games when we have them here. Thats better than where we are now.
Of course this all depends on what the WAC decides to do.

We could schedule both of those teams now and fill Hornet Stadium. The only difference is if it were done at the WAC level was it would be done at a higher operating cost (hight coaches salaries and additional scholarships to fund).

I agree about the Davis and Poly games now but I think Hawaii and San Jose State would be good draws too.

The MWC may pay for them to move. They are going to be desperate. I'm pretty sure the PAC 10/12 helped out Colorado so they could move a year early. I think they helped Utah too.

Not sure about Hawaii but I think SJSU would get a good draw. Fresno State would sell out as well.

My guess is Colorado could forgo its first years share of TV revenue to cover any payouts it made to leave the Big 12. I don't think the MWC TV payouts could be used in a similar way as I don't think they are that big.

I think the school hasn't made any public statement because until now there wasn't any real chance of us getting an invite. Now that the WAC is desperate we may be one of their candidates because we have a football team and a stadium that meets NCAA 1A standards (no matter how ugly it is). We also have potential NCCA 1A basketball standard venues readily available in Memorial and Arco. Inclusion into a 1A conference may help persuade donors divvy up money to build an adequate arena and improve the stadium. Sponsorship money would probably raise too.

This story will get more interesting I'm sure. I think our hope of an invite rests on what Fresno and Nevada decide, and what LA Tech does. I think LA Tech has 3 options. 1) Move to the Sun Belt 2) Wait to see if the MWC invites Houston or Memphis and try to fill their spot in the CUSA or 3) stay in a 6 team WAC with no regional rivals and a massive travel budget. I think they will try to avoid option 3. Should Fresno State, Nevada and LA Tech leave, WAC is at 5 football schools and 6 all sport assuming UNLV and SDSU stay put. even if they join, the WAC is at 7 football and 8 for the rest of sports. The WAC may be looking our way as a quick fix to a dire situation.

My 2 cents anyway

Boy you have a long hard day at work and when you turn around, all this happens.

Seriously, after reading this morning that Nevada and Fresno had turned down invites, I thought that was it. The Hornet staff is prob meeting right now trying to figure out what to do next, assuming that maybe the WAC has sent out an invite. Crazy stuff!

Nevada has been extended a MWC invite.

I'd think the WAC would add UCFE, Montana and Texas State if Fresno and Reno both bail on the WAC.

Again, Montana doesnt have enough sports. They are not going to add ucd right now until they could get assurances about a stadium expansion. The WAC would ask us if we can play at Arco until we can build the arena, the invite is yours. I don't know if TxSt has enough sports to qualify right now either.

It would be easier to add a $22M football addition and the prestige of a UC vying to be a top-10 research institution then Sac State who needs a minimum of $80M for an arena and stadium. Plus, an AD who is actively shopping for a different job. If both schools are basing anything on assurances, I'd go with the assurance of UCFE being able to find the money easier than Sac.
