MSU @ Sac

The Hornets dominated the first half and held a lead of 7 at one point. Like always the lead is blown and MSU took a 27-25 lead into half. I hate to say it but TB needs to be benched. He has gotten nothing going and his drives to the hoops have resulted in nothing. He is killing us tonight. Alpha has played a little. The Hornets were hot early but were unable to stretch their lead. FWIW the Hornets had the last possession at the end of the half and again looked lost…and that was coming out of a timeout. Katz again ran a high screen with TB while everyone else stood around and watched. TB was called for a push off and therefore a shot was not taken. Not sure why Katz would run a play with TB struggling like he has been. TB has 3 fouls so maybe, just maybe we will see Groom tonight. MSU has been deadly from beyond the arc 4/11; Katz has made no adjustment to defend it.

Hornets played well in the second half and really for most of the game. The MSU 3 point shooting and the failure at the FT line by the Hornets has been the difference so far.

54-49 Hornets lead with 6:13 left. MSU at the line.
Hornets are in the bonus and will need to make these to win this. 56-51 Sac with 5:20 left.
TB passes the ball to no one and turns it over. MSU ball with 4:45 left. 3 straight turnovers by TB. He is falling apart. 56-54 Hornet lead with 3:52 left. MSU ball.
58-57 MSU lead with 1:37 left. Hornet ball. Duro hits a short one. 59-58 Sac. MSU shot blocked, Hornets ball. TB turns it over, no shot taken on that possession. MSU ball trailing by 1 with 21.5 seconds left. Rush drills a shot. 60-59 MSU, Hornet ball with 12.2 seconds left. Carbajal drives to the hoop but his shot isn't close. MSU to the line with 3.7 seconds left. At least it wasn't a high screen to TB. Wow. MSU misses the second FT and Dickson grabs and hurls the rebound with plenty of time to at least maybe make it a half court shot.
61-59 MSU final.

The Hornets probably would have won had they not wasted so many possessions. By that I mean the handful of 3 pointers by Dickson and Nelson and the numerous possessions burned with a quick shot before the offense could run a play. Those poor decisions mean the difference in these close games. TB needs to be benched. Time for Groom to see some time at PG.

At least we're competitive...I won't be totally critical of Katz because a coach can do so much and then the players have to play. I just don't see winning in their blood. Good call by Katz to get the 2 pts after the timeout. But after that the following 2 or 3 possessions to end the game was just ugly. We look like a confused team, standing around looking to see what the dribbler (STB) was going to do. Bounce, bounce, bounce drive and make bad pass into the post...

In the last 3 possessions of the game I'm not sure we took a shot except for Carbajal's weak, no lazy attempt at a driving layup. My only criticism of Katz is the team is not prepared to close out a game. They are not going to blow anybody out so the coach would have to place a premium on execution in close games. At least 80% of the practice should be about that. It is obvious they don't practice these situations and it was telling in Dixon's desparation heeve with what 3.7 seconds left. If they PRATICED he would have known they could have gotten a rushed but managable 3 pt shot off. The Tyus Edny rule, a point guard can go end to end with 4 seconds and get a layup--with no pass. What the heck was Dixon doin anyway???

But it's coaching. Dixon's a good young player, but he has NO basketball IQ so why is he in at the end of any game? Where was the 3 guard package. You have to think MSU is going to make both those FTs and you run your inbound play THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE PRACTICED with a 3 guard set to get a 3 pt shot off with 3.5 seconds left. The offset to that is they miss the 2nd shot and you firedrill to get a 3. You don't fling the ball off a rebound like it's gonna blow up in your hands.

It's not even the execution, I don't see a plan. No execution; no plan. It wasn't there from the last 3 posession to the final fling of the ball, which was symbolic of this team's play at the end of games.

I like Katz but man I hope he'll get it soon. He's killin me with this. And by the way, play the freakin Freshmen!

How comical is it that we've played so terribly yet we're two OT games and a blown lead against MSU from being 3-0 in BSC play?

How comical is it that people feel that close losses to comparable competition is acceptable?
