MULITALO AND BRANNON BOTH EARN PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS

8/22/2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State linebackers Cyrus Mulitalo and Mike Brannon were each named to The Sports Network’s Football Championship Subdivision Preseason All-America team, it was announced today. Mulitalo was one of four linebackers tabbed for the first team while Brannon was named to the third team. The Hornets were the only team in the FCS to be represented by two linebackers.

The preseason honor is just the latest for the pair who were both named to the Big Sky Conference’s preseason first team.

A three-year starter at middle linebacker, Mulitalo was a first team all-Big Sky selection and honorable mention All-American last season after tallying 98 tackles, including 13.5 tackles-for-loss. He enters the season ranked fifth in school history with 240 career tackles and is also fifth with 26.0 career TFLs. Over the past two seasons, he has had no fewer than six tackles in each of the team’s 22 games and has tallied double-digit tackles in 10 games.

Brannon joined Mulitalo as both a first team all-Big Sky selection and honorable mention All-American in 2007. He had a breakthrough year with 91 total tackles and a team-best 18.0 tackles-for-loss. He already holds the school’s Div. I-AA/FCS era record with 18.5 sacks and needs just seven more to set the all-time mark. He is also 5.5 TFLs shy of the school record and will move into the top 10 in school history in career tackles with 13 more.

As a conference, the Big Sky dominated the list with 18 recipients. That total was six more than any other conference in the FCS. A complete list of the teams can be viewed below.

Sacramento State opens its regular season on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Humboldt State. Kickoff will come at 6:05 p.m. from Hornet Stadium.
