Muscatell given an extension

Sacramento State women's coach Dan Muscatell received a contract extension through the 2009-10 season. He has a 27-112 record in five seasons.

Last month, the NCAA gave Muscatell's program an Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Award, which honors teams that record multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores in the top 10 percent for all squads in their respective sports.

Stupid. Is graduation the only criteria for keeping a WBB coach around here? What about WINNING? They should have dumped Muscatell at the same time they dumped Jenkins and taken the Delta Daily Double with Katz and Gina Johnson.

I know a lot of 4.0 students.....I might have to send them Dan Muscatell's way because we obviously have given up on winning basketball games and only academics matter now.

Give me a break hornetalumni and Super Hornet for which you both should be ashamed to call yourselves...how about Hornetbashers that seems to fit better. It's very obvious you didn't see these kids play last season and that you have no concept on what it takes to build a program. They broke a record on away games won in a season for the school and like I said, if you were there you would know these girls were in most every game down to the end. Why don't you get behind these girls and this coaching staff. Anyone who knows the history of this program would know it's on the upswing. This sounds personal to me....huh?????

Muscatell has had way too long to turn the program around. You want an example of someone doing it right? Look no farther than Kim Hughes, who has been running a winning gymnastic program at Sac State IN THE SAME GYM for years. His student-athletes consistently score well both in the classroom and on the mat. If Muscatell can't do the same, it's time for him to go.

You call that Hornet bashing? Hardly.

He is a great coach obviously. My hat's off to him. He's been at Sac State for 27 years!!! That's a long time to build a GREAT PROGRAM!!! What was the program like before he got there? Curious? Was he up against the same obstacles Muscatell is up against? hmmmmmmm

I would have every right to be ashamed to call myself a Hornet Alumni a few years ago. Finally, the athletic dept. is making changes in the sports who fail to keep pace with the success of the rest of the CSUS sports (men's basketball, football) but seemed to forget about women's basketball. The women's team has failed in success and fan support in the 5 or 6 years Muscatell has been at Sac. What was the road win record? 2? Wow, write that one in permanent ink in the record books! What an amazing feat! At this rate the women should have a .500 season by 2020. Maybe next year they will break the record for wins on rainy days? We are stretching to find positive results with Muscatell, you can tell by the focus on academics on his contract extension release.
P.S. This is a debate forum, where hornet fans can state their opinions on current issues, so please don't start calling every opinion against the decisions of the athletic department "personal". I also love America but I don't support every politician and decision. Let's not get sensitive.

No one is taking anything personal. You can write whatever you want obviously. This program was majorly struggling when he came in. MAJORLY!!! This would be hard for anyone to turn around immediately and all I'm saying is he seems to be moving in the right direction. I admire the guy for taking it on. Not too many that would even consider it. Nothing personal here....like I said before...it seems personal for you (Just an opinon). And you never answered me before. You spoke a lot about the seniors this year. I asked you in a previous thread if you had been to any of the games this year. I'm curious, how many did you go to?

After this season, I was all for giving him ONE YEAR to try and show some more improvement, a close to .500 season, something! But, we must recognize the academic achievements of his players and acknowledge he has a young team on his hands. I'm still for giving him one year, two tops (the academic achievements may warrant this), and I wouldn't hesitate to let him go after a bad year with bad academic results.

I went to at least 5 games, more in the past years. You don't have to see many games to know a coach isn't getting it done. It comes down to his record and lack of post season play.

You went to 5 games and you sure know a whole lot about this team. Here is your post from a previous thread. "There is a decent group of seniors leading the way next year and if they don't finish in the top 5 I can't see how there wouldn't be changes". You don't know anything about this team. The starting five this year consisted of 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores, and 1 Junior. There are only 2 seniors on the team next year and one is injured and won't play. What are you talking about? Like I said before...sour grapes.

I was in attendance enough this year and the last 4 years to know the senior group is solid (after watching 5+ games this year and many more in the past), whether or not the (losing) coach started any of them. Let stop using youth as an excuse or Muscatell will start freshman every year. I have heard from a few of the girls themselves, not to mention parents, about what goes on around there and after a few games, it was no longer worth my time to show up. Make some changes and I'll start showing up again. As far as the "sour grapes" comment....Yes, I'm upset about a losing Hornet program being ignored, but this forum is for debate and nobody is "sour" or getting "personal" so enough with that. Let's talk issues and not act childish.

Attack the post, not the poster. If it continues, expect a vacation from this place a while.

Remember, its not what you say, its how you say it.

No one is attacking anyone. The facts just need to be clear. There is only ONE senior on this team next year (Jordan is hurt and won't play and barely played at all this season due to injury) I just asked what seniors hornetalumni was referring to. I also strongly believe that if in fact anyone has spoken to the players or parents about anything that has to do with this program, a forum where we hide behind an annonymous name is not the place to speak for them, it could cause unneccessary problems.

Fact are:
One Senior
A handful of freshmen and sophomores this season that contributed a lot.
These kids were in most games all the way down to the end.
They played every team tougher as the season went on.
They will get great leadership out of Atty next season and are even more prepared for what is to come.
Dan has added two Assistant Coaches that have made a huge difference.

The most important FACT:
This team needs poeple to get behind them and support them with their coaching staff.

My Opinion:
I am in the middle of all High School recruiting and talk due to my employment:
If it doesn't work out for Sac with this group of players and coaches, the program won't make it.
I don't think anyone realizes the magnitude of the accomplishments that were made this last season on the court and in the classroom.

One more fact: A school and program has to become attractive to the outside before it can have any success. This program has been down for so long and this is the light it needs to be successful even with just a few wins. Other sports, ie gymnastics, has less to contend with as far as recruiting goes. There are a lot fewer Div ! gymnastics programs then there are WBB programs. Top athelets are hard to come by in WBB especially when a program has suffered in the past. This coaching staff has been able to recruit some top players out of each of their areas in the last couple of years. Sac State is now being talked about on High School forums and amongst AAU coaches. That is a HUGE step.

The only arguments for this coach have to do with everything BUT success and winning potential. Who cares if high school forums talk about the program? If we stretched this far to find positives about Jerome and the men's program, he would have had a 5 year extension, thank goodness that's not the case.

5 years is long enough to get a program going in the right direction. There is no way anybody can justify that this program is going in the right direction, other than academics, and Muscatell deserves an extension.

Even if you give him a free pass the first two years since CJ really destroyed this program, he hasn't done much of anything the last three years. Injuries are part of the game.

I wonder if race has anything to do with this. Jenkins and Muscatell. One man fired, another one gets an extension.

I thought the men's coach at Sac State was the coach for 8 years before they let him go.
Is that right? And, it is a big deal that this program is being talked about on High School Forums and amongst High School Coaches. That's where a lot of the recruits come from.
