Sacramento State women's basketball head coach Dan Muscatell returned to the University of Oregon on Monday as an assistant coach after six seasons with the Hornets.

Muscatell, who compiled a 36-133 record and earned two Big Sky Conference Tournament berths at Sac State, served as an Oregon assistant from 1999-2003.

"Dan is an outstanding coach who has proven himself as both a head coach and an assistant," Oregon head coach Paul Westhead said in a statement. "Obviously he has shown that he can recruit at the Division I level and his ties to the Northwest, as well as his familiarity with the UO, will help us.

"His coaching skills on the floor will be valuable as we implement our new system and as our student-athletes continue to develop."

Muscatell's 2008-09 team finished 7-9 in league play, Sac State's best mark since joining the Big Sky before the 1996-97 season.

This move just doesn't make sense to me... I guess he's probably looking at a few extra bucks and a couple years of job security as the new UO regime gets underway, but dang leaving a DI team after your best year and with great potential for next year. Oh well... Best of luck coach...

Does anyone know if there was a contract extension offered? Or was Wanless going to drop the axe anyways?

Thank you Coach for leaving this program much better than the one you inherited. This job will look really attractive as a program on the rise after the past two seasons and only losing one starter from this year's team.

A good coach, but better than that, a great man. Thanks Dan!

What a joke. Hired a new coach from within. I guess 9 wins is good around this school. Maybe we can win the Spirit Stick Award. Just a plain lazy move by the athletic department not to open this up and see who might apply.

Student referendum failed, no money for a traditionally pathetic team. They gave the job to someone who didn't cost a dime to find.

Let's see: The program wins the most conference games in school history, graduates its players, wins consecutive APR awards, returns the entire roster except one player and a coach who has helped to build it is promoted. What's the problem here?

wrkrb, I'm with you on this... I think Jamie will do a good job of continuing the academic success of late and moving the program forwards. I know that the players like her, she's young, and can relate.

This makes for a fluid transition next year with many, many players returning. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ladies be a top 4 seed in the BSC tourney next year.

A good, common sense, fiscally responsible, hire. :)

This hire was all about $$ and nothing to do with victories. Are you telling me that there isn't a more qualified coach out there who isn't 28 years old without any head coaching experience? It's obvious Sac State doesn't care about womens athletics.

HornetNest, why so negative? Money will always be a consideration in hiring decisions at Sac. Thinking otherwise is a joke. I'll take the continuity, a potential up and coming coach who knows the players and feel good about allowing her to run with it. We aren't in a position with facilities or finances to think we can make some grand hiring splash. And the belief that this department doesn't care about women's sports just doesn't add up when you look at how successful the women's programs are at Sac State.

I think everyone knows how I feel about Wanless, but I think this is a very good move...But why the interim tag??? With as much sense as this move makes, just give her the job.

This is probably the most insane statement I have seen on this site...worse than SH's love for all things Pacific.

Really Sacto?

Men's football job opens up and Sac State conducts a nationwide search for the new coach. Men's baskeball job opens up and Sac State conducts a nationwide search for the new coach. Women's basketball job opens up and Sac State offers the job to the 28 year old assistant coach who has no head coaching experience.

Interesting, two "nationwide" searches that resulted in two local juco coaches. And it's very simple, the interim tag is a way of getting her on the cheap for a year. They probably tried to talk her into staying at the same pay, hope she didn't take the bait.

One of the big reasons you dont want your recruits to back out...there is coaching continuity and this is her first gig...hence the interim label. Remember last year when Katz got hired and scrambled to get players...believe me, if it wasn't Craighead, you'd have seen defections from the current players and some of the recruits.

I have no problem with Coach Craighead as she has been part of turning this program around the last three years...I have seen it firsthand because Im one of the 250 or so people that actually show up to women's hoops.

I normally am not a fan of promoting assistant coaches lacking head coaching experience without a search to see who else is out there. It has been done in men's basketball with Anders and Jenkins and it has not worked out well. This case seems different however, as mentioned the team made progress last season and return all but one starter, recruiting is underway and the current players have a good relationship with Coach Craighead. It is very late in the year to be starting a coaching search now.
Hiring Coach Craighead as Interim Head Coach seems like a no brainer, if she proves that she has the skills to keep the program moving forward make her permanent, if not it gives the program a early and easy out to go another direction. Sounds like a win-win for both the school and Coach Craighead!

I have no problem with rewarding loyalty. I still would have preferred hiring Gina Johnson, but internal promotions usually make for a smooth transfer of power. Besides, every assistant coach who wants to be a head coach at least deserves a chance. I wish Craighead well.

Coach Muscatell got a $40K raise, a car, and some other perks, in addition to be vested into the Oregon retirement system. If those were offered to you, most everybody here would take that job offer.

He did a good job rebuilding this program after the disaster that was Coach Jenkins, maybe Sac St shouldn't hire anybody named Jenkins!!!

Not sure how Craigwell is going to do but she would do herself a huge favor by hiring an experienced coach, as her top assistant.

Coach Jenkins was the men's basketball coach. Coach Muscatell was the women's basketball coach. Two completely seperate programs.
