Boise State announced that their young stud WR Jeremy Childs was suspended from the team this week. The Idaho Statesman dug in and got Childs' brother to admit that Jeremy was suspended from school for plagiarism (the school cannot reveal details due to privacy laws, though the school has been believed to throw out leaks now and then). So Jeff Caves comes out on the radio Tuesday and argues that "Childs' contributions to the school" SHOULD be considered (or at least ARE being considered) as a factor in the punishment decision. Now, ask me if I consider Boise State, losers of this year's Hawaii Bowl, "big time," never mind the previous year.
Some of my message is that the attitude is out there, even in places you may not expect. The corollary to that: "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
Of course, it's not like I haven't witnessed at least "pushing the edge" in my Oregon time, yet that hasn't stopped me from being a fan. I know Oregon isn't perfect in this regard... the question is how far away. At least I never heard any serious whisper campaigns. I recall one guy whose car was a bit on the extravagant side...
Mr. Emmert's epilogue mentions Bill Fleenor, who was a mainstay on at least one of the boards I used to frequent, as pulling his support from UW over their insistence on keeping Ty Willingham. I saw improvement in their program this last season, so while Fleenor's move strikes me as beneficial down here, I do find it kind of disconcerting... not sure that's the guy I remember.
