This is the most glaring stat, and until it improves we aren't going to win many games.

I agree . . . .unfortunately we are what we are.

No excuse for those type stats....none, sorry. With Hayfords salary wonder what that comes out to per loss(or per win)?

I do think the stats are misleading. We are much better and have a strong nucleus. Jois is obviously the centerpiece and we will be able to build around him for the next three years! He should be frosh of the year.

Hey 1990, we are far enough into the season, and have a sufficient sample size, that I dont think there is any way to say the stats are "misleading" or that we are "better than the stats." We are exactly what the stats say we are: a terrible defensive team. And IMO it has nothing to do with "being young." First of all, we are not that young in terms of years of college basketball experience. Crosgile 4 years, Forbes 4 years, Winford 5 years, Chiverton 5 years, Seifert 3 years, Kelly 2 years, Hickert 3 years. Among the guys who were playing much, only Jois and Reuter are in their 1st year of college basketball. It has everything to do with us allowing easy baskets. When the other team gets a rebound, we dont run back on defense. We dont box out so we allow 2nd chance points. Our defense in the post is pathetic.

There is not a team in college basketball that plays awful defense and wins. Obviously Coach Hayford has not realized this yet.

I think the stats are a little misleading. Can't fault others opinions but the first half of the season was all about trying different team plays/players to gain some insight and get some experience for the freshman and new transfers. Conference play has gone as expected: we have played the top three teams in the Big Sky and lost to them, two of these games without Crosgile. Losing any key team member will affect the balsnce of a team and the team has had to adjust to Chivertons loss earlier in the season and now Crosgiles :( This weeks game will show us where we are
I am expecting two wins.
Go Team
Go eags!

Thank you Aussie. Finally someone that agrees with me. We will get two wins this week! Also you are correct that we are struggling for very good reasons. We are likely one of the few teams in the country that have transfers and new players so our rankings in the 300 range is to be expected. Plus this is only coaches second year. It is going to take time for players to learn his system.

I will agree with you that, from what I have seen, our defensive play has been pretty awful and we will not win many games until that improves.

I do, however, maintain that this is a young team. Forbes, Winford, Chiverton, and even Hickert are experienced players in the Big Sky at this point, but Seifert, Kelly, Jois, Reuter, not so much. So while we have some individual players with a lot of experience, the collective experience of the team as a whole playing together isn't very high.

Losing Crosgile, and also Danny Powell to a season ending injury hurts. Having Chiverton out for most of the early season hurt as well. So while the stats are what they are, I don't really think they reflect the potential that this team has.

This team has a number of young players that will form the nucleus of what should be a very good team over the next 3-4 years. You look at guys like Jois, Reuter, etc. those guys are going to be very good players. Next year we will have more depth inside, as well, as the 7'1" German kid is RSing this season.

How much experience do you need to bend your knees and move your feet. Defense is effort and a little planning.

Touche'. You are indeed wise and succinct.

I've never followed Whitworth basketball. Was coach a defensive coach there or more offensive? I guess my question is, is it really youth or just not coach's style? You hear a lot in the pros defense coach vs. offensive coach. Just wondering if that is the case at the college level too.
