NAU in town..., Hopefully

NAU has been out with Covid-19 since the end of January. Their last game was the 29th. By the time they play us on Thursday, they will have been out of action for 20 days.

I have watched them play 3 or 4 times this year. They lost two or three of their best players from last year, but they seem to have plenty of athletes. They don't have the big man they had last year and that makes them a bit vulnerable in the paint. They seem to, at least try, and make up the difference with quickness. Their PG is everything for them, much like Harding was for us last year. They can not be taken lightly. They can beat you if you don't play solid D. We should be heavily favored, but that is only on paper. I'm hoping that we don't have any sort of a let down.

Let's take care of business and defend our home floor. :coffee:

Hey, Oldrunner. Keeping my fingers crossed NAU actually gets to play a game or two this weekend.

NAU hoops is painfully young this year but have a shot if Cameron Shelton has a good game. I'll log in and watch Thursday's game.

Go Jacks!

Thanks for checking in Jack. Please come back as often as you like.

From what I've seen, Cameron has been almost unstoppable. From his PG position, he does it all. Top scorer, top rebounder, top assist man, and I believe he gets the most steals on the team. He was a 3* coming out of HS and has developed beyond that now. He could be the best player in the BSC this year. If NAU were more successful, he might be a shoe in for MVP. He might be anyway.

I think these are going to be fun games. :coffee:

As of right now, these games are on. There have been no cancelations. NAU should be boarding a bus soon, if they are not already here. Last their coach was interviewed, they had 8 healthy players and expected more to be cleared soon. I believe that interview was yesterday.

I've got my tickets and plan to make what noise I can through a face mask.

NAU plays a slow, deliberate game on O, but allows a high percentage on D.

Like I said before, we just have to play solid D and we should be okay.

Four out of our last six games are at home. :coffee:

WEBER STATE, WEBER STATE, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT

Weber for another 3 from just east of Hunstville!!! Good heavens. Please tell me Weber State doesn't do that every game.

NAU looked like they hadn't played in 3 weeks. Fitting. I won't be able to listen to the game on Saturday but I'll follow the score on my phone.

EWU, SUU, Weber State and Montana State (up til the last few games) have all looked good this season. I think the Big Sky tourney should be fun and wide open.

NAU was obviously at a huge disadvantage coming into this game. Weber State shot well and wore down NAU as the game moved on.

I think NAU will have a better showing Saturday, but I still expect a 10 plus point win given NAU’s recent game time and young players.

Brown had a great game, and Carlson’s 10 rebounds and double-double is impressive, too.

Like the how the team concept is there and it seems to be improving as season goes on. It’s quite the contrast to past few year teams.

How come bassett and porter didn't play? Impressive win
Basset is ill, not COVID and may miss Saturdays game as well. Porter was a team rules thing and will play Saturday. Probably late for practice or missed a class assignment. A good lesson to learn. Coaches will never say exactly what the rule was that was broken. :coffee:

Talked to one of the officials. He said that NAU looked out of sorts, probably due to having no action in the last three weeks. They will probably play better Saturday. :thumb:

I would like to point out that the refs we got were excelent. They let players play and only blew their whistles when they had to. It was refreshing to see. The best officiated game I've seen in a long while. I don't think they went to the monitor even once. I hope we get that crew again. :thumb: :thumb:

Thats a poor excuse for a D1 team! Even for a team in the bottom end of Division One basketball such as the Big Sky Conference. Yes, they are too young but they are also too untalented and too poorly coached. No wonder Weber hit 18 3-pointers. It is not as hard as one might think if allowed to shoot wide-open threes all night. I cannot imagine that NAU will be that much better on Saturday. If we come to play it will be another lopsided game. The talent differential, even if unmotivated, is just too great.

My opinion is that NAU is a much better team than what we saw last night. Yes we are more talented, but NAU had a lot of rust to shake off. It will be a more competitive game on Saturday. We will still win if we play the same sort of D, but the game should be a little more competitive. NAU has some good athletes and they are long enough. They are a little slender in the post, but they are athletic. It also may be a new set of officials who will call it the way they did in Montana. If that happens, it will be a steady trip to the FT line and a lot harder to watch. I don't expect another 30 point blowout.

NAU may try to press us a little bit. Their zones didn't work, so I don't see them doing a lot of that. They did try to slow the game down, but had little success doing it. They would miss on their end and we would trot down the floor and hit a three or get a dunk. I guess you could say that they kept us from scoring 100 and beating them by 40+. In that respect, their slowdown tactic worked. I really don't think they will, once again, hold the ball for 20 seconds before starting their O. However, you can tell that they don't want to get into a track meet with us. :coffee:

Solid game on the boards and moving the ball around. Now they need to take the momentum on the road. On to Sacramento State...hopefully.

NAU came out with a lot more fire defensively. I thought our D was consistent as well. Cam Shelton did not play a lot of minutes and didn't seem to have his head in the game when he was in. I don't know what was going on with him, but something wasn't right. He didn't even warm up with his team.

We missed a lot of little chip shots at the rim, shots that we normally make. It didn't hurt us much, because NAU was missing a lot of the same sorts of shots. I don't remember too many games where that many layups were missed. If we shot at our normal rate, it would have been another 30 point win.

My feeling is that our team can and will improve right through to the end of the season. Watch out for next year. When we get Percy back, add a piece or two, and have this season under our belts, we will be a formidable team. I'm really liking this group of players. :notworthy: :notworthy:
