NAU pt 1

WILDCAT

Active member
Our last home game before going back on the road, This one is against one of our oldest foes the Lumberjacks from Northern Arizona.

NAU is struggling, to say the least, from what I gather, it's all a micture of youth, losing a coach, no big men etc.

NAU is 5-13 overall and 1-5 in the BSC thier one win coming over Sacramento State. In thier BSC losses, they have lost by an average of 16 points, but showed True grit in thier comeback (which fell short) against MSU they were down 14 at half, but outscored MSU by 12 in the second falling 2 points short.

The way I see it, Tresnak and our other bigs should have a field day, but we cant let NAU get hot, even though he is no longer there, Baldy's motto was recruit to shoot so we know that these current Jacks can still shoot.

Lets come out, get another win and gain even more momentum going into Sacramento

GO WILDCATS

fired their coach who was good...

1-7 on the road...

5 straight losses...

6-42 in ogden....

these are the ingredients for a beatdown

Don't sleep on these guys! Saw the game vs. Arizona State at ASU, granted the Sun Devils are having their own issues, but there was no quit in the Lumberjacks. They hung around and hung around until the end and it was close, they made the last second shot and left with a huge morale builder.

Beating Weber has that same kind of motivation, so NAU will come into the Dee to knock Weber off.... Get ahead, and step on 'em.

The Wildcats can't overlook anyone. They have to bring it every game. NAU, just because they are having a down year, is no exception.

NAU played great in the second half last Saturday vs. MSU. They employed a full court press that worked well. The scoring was spread out between a lot of players. The team's effort was fantastic in the 2nd half. The wins haven't materialized but a lot of young freshmen and sophomores are getting valuable experience. Have to chalk this season up as a "learning" experience. Those are the postives.....

Now with the negatives.....The team shooting percentage has been way down this season. This may be the worst 3 point shooting team in ages but that could be due teams keying on the shooters due to the lack of an inside game. Gabe Rogers doesn't seem to be at 100% or as comfortable as before the shoulder surgery. Not due to lack of effort but his game has just been off. Team turnovers have been ongoing and the youth and lack of size/post presence is apparent.

If NAU can channel the 2nd half of the MSU game or what they did in the ASU game in Tempe then the Jacks have a fighting chance. If not...it's going to get ugly real quick.

Night shift at work is up in the air tomorrow...kinda hope I don't get the call and can watch Lillard in action. I'll chime in here at some point regardless of whether I get to watch on bigskytv or not.

I don't know if the term "looking forward to" can be used to this game but if I didn't quit following the Jacks before Ben Howland was coach (oohhh...it was bad in the early 90s) then I don't see why I should quit now.

Talk to you tomorrow, Weber Staters.

Always good hearing from you Mt. Jack. Yeah, I thought that the Jacks would be a far more dangerous team. Granted, you guys lost a bit, especially Jones, but with your recruiting class and the guys coming back, it looked like the Jacks would make a solid impact on the Sky. Losing Rogers, and then having two bigs Smith and Lepley leave the team really hurt. I have heard, once Adras left, that there was a chance that both would be coming back next season. Is that a possibility? Anyway, I think that Brown is a solid choice for the interim. Too bad he isn't younger. He will do what he can to recruit solid athletes to NAU. Also, probably more importantly, is the fact that NAU doesn't need to recruit a lot this season. Yes, you need bigs, but if Lepley and Smith do in fact return, then that'll help immensely next season. No matter, NAU is getting a lot of experience right now, and will be much improved next season. Good luck tonight. I hope you got the day off so that you can watch the game.

NAU thinks they're tough. But Weber wants to see how tough. So the Lumberjacks should plan on waking up in a roadside ditch... :thumb:

Josh Lepley is back practicing with the team but isn't officially back on the team (i.e. no court time and possibly won't see any). Coach Brown made a comment that there were certain stipulations that Josh Lepley needed to meet first. Haven't heard a single bit of info re: returning.

Mitch Strohman (NAU radio guy) just said true freshman/leading scorer James Douglas isn't available for tonight's game due to illness. Shiznit. :ohno:

I like Coach Brown and think he's the right call for this situation....but being that old he isn't a long-term solution. It saddens me to say this but whoever they bring in will have their work cut out for them recruiting. If the UCLA sycophants have their way and Howland is fired...I would welcome him back to Flagstaff with open arms.

Didn't get called into work. Right now I'm saying that's good...we shall see if I feel that way in an hour plus.

:blah:

There's a fine line between arrogance and self-confidence. If NAU/opposing Big Sky teams didn't have the self-confidence that, no matter how unlikely, they had a shot at beating WSU in Ogden then they shouldn't be playing college hoops.

The reason I love college hoops more than other sports is upsets can happen anytime and anywhere.

Go Jacks!

Apparently you haven't seen the Direct TV commercial I am quoting. I have no idea what NAU actually thinks. Calm down. Here's a link to it, and you should understand. Hopefuly you get a laugh.

Gotcha. No, offense meant or taken, Hawks. You're right, I missed the reference even though I've seen the ad a bunch.

Scared to comment as this is about the best start NAU's had all season. Long time to go...

Hey, MIGRAman-

I gripe and moan about the heat here but if it was like this year around then central AZ would be as bad as southern California.

I spend each and every available moment outside this time of year.

Tres having his way tonight. Perhaps going for a new career high? And who is this Ekanem guy Mt. Jack? He's a real brawler in the paint. Surprised the Jacks aren't going to him more often.

Juco transfer this year. He's shown a lot of gumption/effort but not too much scoring prowess so far this season. By far, this is the best half he's had this season. Gaellan Bewernick is showing some life inside as well.

WSU seems to consistently recruit AZ better almost than NAU....I knew Fulton was from AZ but didn't know Tresnak was as well.

Haha. It's all good. You got Saldivar from Utah, so we'll take that trade.

Good win cats. Several missed layups by Dame, and one spectacular dunk. I think the ankle is bothering his explosiveness. It will be good to have some time off to give the cats time to heal.

Someone on the board mentioned WSU has the most trouble with guarding free flowing offenses over structured offenses and I think that was definately the case tonight. NAU also shot the ball well too, I thought Rogers played well for the Jacks.

Tres was a monster in the paint, he has really improved his touch and footwork around the basket
