NCAA Puts EWU on Probation

The NCAA placed the Eastern Washington football program on 3 years probation and prohibits it from participating in the 2009 post-season...

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its findings from a two-year review of activities involving the Eastern Washington University football team from 2003-07. The NCAA looked into a series of secondary rule violations, which, taken in total, led to a major infractions case. The violations largely centered on a lack of compliance to participation rules regarding academically non-qualified and ineligible student athletes.

If you read the whole report--all I can say is wow. It goes to show you the things that can happen when a University tries to have one person wear one too many hats.

It also shows that Wulff knowingly broke rules. I hope Washington State is paying attention.

I'm sure Wazzu is, because part of the penalty levied is that Wullf cannot coach Wazzu for the first three days of fall camp this year. He also has to attend NCAA rules seminars for each of the next three years.

One of the interesting aspects of this case is Eastern's heavy reliance on Prop 48s. They averaged 7 props a year for the five-year period, according to the report. That's a lot of non-qualifiers.

PS--It's too bad the NCAA waited until AFTER signing day to issue its findings.

Never been impressed with Wulff. Looks like a sneaky guy and not too bright either in my opinion. This sort of confirms it.

Apparently UW is recruiting EWU's two stud wideouts, Boyce and Brown. That would be a big hit to the Eastern program. Pretty sleazy on UW's part, and it tells you how far that program has fallen, to be poaching players from a 1-AA program.

I do not understand why that would be sleazy. The new coach at UW is the former USC O-Coordinator. That kind of opportunity will not come everyday for those student athletes.

Remember that great players are at all different divisions. Heck, I remember Vincent Jackson playing for UNC Bears and he tore it up. That was when they were making the transition from D-II to D 1-AA. He is now playing professionally and still making big plays.

With that in mind, If UW is looking at recruiting them, then UW must feel that those players would fit into what they are trying to build. That is quite a compliment for those players since you have to recognize what conference UW participates in.

I find the idea of trying to take advantage of a 1-AA team's misfortunes "sleazy," If U-W has to "recruit" from the Big Sky Conference, rather than find D-1 quality players on their own, that tells me how far their program has fallen.
