NCAA rule changes = frustrating basketball

After watching college hoops the past few weeks, including Weber's 4 games I am shaking my head trying to figure what the NCAA rule makers were thinking. What I've seen is tacky fouls, little or no rhythm for teams in games, as there are so many whistles, greater affect on games by the refs, etc. Weber games with SJSU was a good example. :wall:

Not sure what was behind the changes: higher scoring? more stoppages? greater reliance on free throws?

Teams that play solid strong defense are going to be penalized. Coaches should just recruit shooters for every position, and let the games become 124-120 run-fests, with little defense played.

I know players and coaches will adjust, but IMO this makes the games less fun to watch.

Players and teams will adjust, and the game will open up a little bit. At least that is what the NCAA is banking on. There have been adjustments already. The next thing they will need to do is call offensive fouls when the defender is holding his ground and the offensive player initiates contact in an effort to gain space. They need to make that call if the defender falls down or not. Right now, we are back to calling the ticky-tack fouls on the outside while letting the inside players commit murder. Worse yet is when they call a defensive foul when the offensive player is the one initiating the contact. :coffee:

First off, I very much feel your frustration. Although the CSU game seemed the worst to me, the USU and SJSU were hard because they were in person. I don't know that the majority of the stoppages were fouls related to the rule changes, but there were certainly what seemed like continual calls stopping the game and making it very frustrating to watch. Combine the rules changes with what is most likely not the best officials in the business at the DEC and it can really make for a less exciting game.

You stated that, "Teams that play solid strong defense are going to be penalized." To a degree, I disagree. I think the teams that are hurt the most are the ones with poorer (defensive) athletes. Those who are capable of playing without their hands or bumping, etc. will adjust and probably do just fine. Those teams with athletes just not capable of making that adjustment most likely continue to struggle. I've been watching the teams with potential lottery picks considerably (because of the Jazz situation) and (at least) I'm not noticing the struggle nearly as much as with the Weber games.

I agree the rule changes has made Weber games less fun to watch and I would never wish for any change that handicaps the defense. Call me old-fashioned but I'd much rather see a hard-nosed defensive match than a high scoring affair, partially manufactured with defensive limitations.

Why fix something that wasn't broken?? Gotta love the thought process of the NCAA. Maybe instead of sanctioning a major program, they decided to punish all DI NCAA programs with idiotic and excitement killing new rules.
