NCAA rules in Montana case

Amazing that you can not give a player so much as a hot dog without violating NCAA rules.

Hot dogs? Sounds like the Griz mom had a regular buffet to "slop the hogs". Regardless, Eastern needs to pay attention to this and not make the same arrogant mistakes. I think the Eags boosters and fans in general are a little more sophisticated and can control themselves.

It was a little more than hot dogs. I.E. several infractions that were not reported. I was kind of surprised there was no post-season ban to be honest, since we basically got the same thing Montana did + plus a post-season ban for fewer and less agregious infractions. I'm not saying they should have been given the death penalty or anything, but all things considered Inthink they got off relatively light.

In the wake of Oregon getting no significant penalty for pay-for-play, I think the NCAA is moving forward with the understanding that they aren't willing to penalize programs harshly any more. Clearly, Montana's infractions were more severe than Eastern's under Wulff and they didn't get a post-season ban (and let's face it, that's the only REAL penalty you can receive). If USC's Reggie Bush scandal happened today, they'd probably only lose a couple of schollies over a 3-4 year period.

This really is a disturbing trend by the NCAA. I don't really get it at all. What they are basically saying is that they'll allow cheating, as long as you can keep it fairly quiet. It'll be interesting to see what happens with U of Miami, since their infractions were sooooooo blatant, and even make Oregon's 25 grand for a letter of intent look like child's play.

What caught my eye is when the Assoc AD said with the loss of 4 scholarships the next three years wouldn't hurt that bad. He said since '07 they have awarded less than the 63 anyway and have 61 slated for this season(loss of schollies goes into effect '014). Makes me wonder if EWU is handing out all available schollies if we have such a tight budget compared to UM...
