NCAA rules

Have chop block rules changed? This seems to be getting called a lot, and whenever it gets called, the replay shows it's highly dubious. I was under the impression that a chop block is either going low on a player engaged with another blocker or a block to the back of the legs (in other words, what used to be called clipping).

I don't know what's changed with the rules (if anything) but my understanding is the same as yours. It should be called when a player is engaged high and someone cuts blocks him underneath.

Clipping, I believe, can be called when a block is applied anywhere from behind, not just to the legs. In fact, a block to the back is a form of clipping if I remember correctly.

One of the new rules that a player can not be blocked below the waist.

"Blocking Below the Waist
Offensive players who are outside the tackle box at the snap, and those who leave the tackle box after the snap, may only block an opponent below the waist if the force of the initial contact is directly at the opponent's front. However, they may not block an opponent below the waist in a direction toward the original position of the ball unless the ball carrier has clearly crossed the line of scrimmage."

So from now on a player needs to bring their attorney to decipher rules!

The new rues this year and the "targeting" rule are a real puzzlement to me.
Isn't there a rules committee made up of AD's and coaches? If so how could they let such stupid rules dictate the game we love.

Are you watching the BYU game by chance? The refs just threw two guys out for awful targeting calls. Both were reviewed and the ref kicked the guys out despite both being wretched calls.

I thought the WSU one on Hill was a pretty clear case of targeting, but I've seen a few questionable ones.

BTW, I'm watching WSU play Boise State...and they are struggling.
