NDSU vs. Chuck Southern

FCS football begins in a little over an hour! Who is tuning in?

I'm hoping to see the first of many Bizzzon losses tonight. They can't keep winning FCS championships- it's a bad look for our division.

Something tells me that if they lose a game this season, it's probably not going to be at the hands of Charleston Southern.

This will basically a be a glorified practice for the Bizon.

I love the way these teams play defense. NDSU can get jammed up if you really get after them on D. Probably water under the bridge so far as Eastern is concerned, but I'd love to see our D at least try to get after it at the line of scrimmage like Charleston Southern does.

Mad props to NDSU, as that was an absolutely overwhelming physical performance. Chuck South was very game, and even had a great shot to win. But you could tell NDSU's commitment to playing physical football was the game changer. They just beat up CSU. You tell the tide was turning when CSU players started limping off the field... If nothing else is true about football, the team that beats up the other wins about 98% of the time.

From what I saw of the game CSU played a really good game. Nothing to be ashamed of in that performance.

Except missing the winning field goal.

I thought Charleston Southern played about as well as they could. They aren't great on offense, and their commitment to trying to beat NDSU to the edge was weird. That stretch option went for negative yards pretty much every time. But their D was great. I really appreciate teams that get physical and try to contest the line of scrimmage. NDSU only beat them over the top once, which will happen when you press. But it beats the hell out of our system of playing way back and giving up first down after first down. Hopefully we employ that same type of thing this year instead of the same old bottom-of-the-Big Sky crap we've seen ver the last few seasons.

I'm almost positive that kicker is somehow related to Justin Smoak (of Mariners infamy.) I thought I heard them say he was from a place called Goose Creek, which I believe is where Justin is from. So choking is in his blood.

NDSU was down one starting lineman, lost two to graduation, and it showed a little. It seems like they always bust a couple straight up the gut for big yardage and I didn't see that happening last night. CSO also has some great speed at LB that fill gaps quickly.

That said, the Bizon still managed 230 yards. Play great D and posses the ball. Nothing new. They're not going to beat with Stick's arm. He's almost like a triple option QB. Fairly accurate to some wide open receivers on a limited amount of throws. That's not to say he can't be a great passing QB at some point but he is still a sophomore.

There's not mystery for us in Fargo. We have to win some battles on first and second down. And/or just track meet them.

CSU looked good. Terrible QB reads killed them and the "pistol" option look was slow to the point of attack on the dive play. Takeaway: NDSU is beatable. Did anyone see evidence they could cover EWU's WR's? Let's assume the O Line give's whoever is at QB 2 seconds to deliver the ball.

NDSU made uncharacteristic mistakes and penalties that they now have two weeks to clear up. They are beatable but it will take the Eagles best and mistake free effort.
NO PENALITES- that is why we lost in Cedar City last season.

Penalties were definitely a problem. Losing Cooper didn't help either.

They're beatable, but The Eagle D has to get off the field. After watching the game yesterday, I had horrible visions of the defense just getting steamrolled 5 yards at a time.

Yes, I was there. Guess I was thinking of Utah. I do know where Fargo is though!

Answer to your question = No. That was one of the things I took away from the game. Eags need to take the top of that defense with our wide outs. I hope we take many shots downfield because I think it will be to our advantage. At the same time, I don't believe for a second that we can go in there and get a win with a finesse approach. We need to find a way to punch them in the mouth with the run game. Their offense looked better to me than the scoreboard showed at the end of the game. I was pretty impressed with the mobility and strength of their QB and their overall run game. We're going to need some SERIOUS toughness on defense to win that game. It can be done though.

go eags!
