New Commit Zahir Porter

We got a new commit today. JC guard from New York. Played his JC ball at Independence Community College. Originally played at NYIT. Played like 1 game there before he went the JC route. Averaged 10 PPG last year. Only played 18 minutes per game and shot 33% from 3 point. He numbers don't really jump out at me. Looks like a really good athlete with some bounce. I worry he is going to be another player that is a great athlete, but average basketball player. Lots more changes coming with players leaving and new ones coming.

He reminds me of Ryan Richardson, a steaky shooter who can do a little bit of everything. One thing that stood out to me was his rebounding. He had some really good rebounding games. He was the sixth man on a very good JC team. Streaky is how I would describe him. He had some outstanding games and then he would have games where he did little, much like Richardson.

Another tall, athletic guard who put up very pedestrian numbers in limited minutes at a juco. I would say this looks like a fairly poor recruit, except that he had offers from PSU and NMSU, both of whom are better than WSU right now. He will join WSU as a junior, I hope there is some real potential there.

The Standard mentioned two other players WSU was recruiting. Tahlik Chavez has committed to Iona, and Clarence Jackson who put up decent numbers as a juco freshman but has tons of offers right now from some good mid-major schools.

It looks like that are lots of great players in the portal right now, including Utah's Matt Van Komen at 7-4. Anyone know of any other offers that have been extended or players being actively recruited? With in-person recruiting on hold it may slow down the signing of new players for a while.

Has Weber State given up on recruiting forwards or centers or heaven forfend, good defenders?

We won't be seeing anything on the grad transfers or drop downs until they have committed. The recruiting process on those guy is much less public. The other thing that is slowing the process is the ban on all visits, both on and off campus, due to the Virus. It's quite likely that recruiting will go well into the summer.

The question of what positions are we recruiting for; the simple answer is all positions. Any and all players who can make us better will be considered.

Rahe’s new offense is a graveyard for a big. He recruits bigs with the promise of being an integral part of the offense, but once you're on campus, your role is limited to put backs and dump offs. He hasn’t run plays for bigs in years! The last 3-4 years it’s been all about setting ball screens for guards. Fuller, Zdor and Kozak are capable of doing more, but in the “new” style of play, they don’t fit in. They’re wasting their careers in this offense. Our PG’s don’t pass!

I agree that the offense was not good this past year. But what I saw was a breakdown in a few fundamental plays that were not being finished correctly. I didn't care for the time wasting weave or getting so far into the shot clock that it forced us into a bad shot. However, we would often run a simple pick and roll action from the elbow, it would work in creating a big man with a clear path to the bucket, and then one of two things would happen. Either the guard would not make the pass or the big man would hesitate long enough for the Defenders to converge. It bugged the crap right out of me and I'm sure the coaches as well. It really hurt when your best PGs were freshmen and your top guard was small.

I don't know this for a fact, but I really think that offense will be shit canned. However, the basic pick and roll is a part of almost every offense and our guys need to work their butts off on it. Working hard on that fundamental is one of the big reasons Lillard has been so successful in the NBA.

We haven’t effectively utilized a big since Tresnak.
Yes. We need to start utilizing our big men more efficiently. I'm sure that will be an emphasis through the summer and fall. I think that three things can contribute to that, and will. First, work hard on developing what we have. Second, recruit players to do it. Third, coach it, coach it, coach it. :coffee:
