New Decade = New Arena?

Actually, Jack, we have NOT hit the new decade yet. The new decade does not start until 1 Jan 2011. If you go back to 1 Jan AD 1 and count forward, you'll see why.

But your point about the arena is well-taken. Sac has a long history of cold feet on athletics improvements going back to The Fat Man era, if not farther. I wouldn't be surprised if we see current status quo when the next third decade of this century starts 1 Jan 2021.

An arena should have been built before going DI in 1996. It should have been an internal requirement before stepping up. In actuality, we have never really been a DI program in facilities or standings. I say if something is not built by 2015, we should really drop to D2. The basketball program isn't attracting the fans to actually pay for itself and w/o a modest arena what casual fan wants to attend a game in Hornet gym?

Problem is GCM you cant just drop to another division in one sport...so you want all of our sports to go back to D2? When ucd finally moved up they were the last school with 20+K students in D2. Now nobody over 20K students is D2...

You're forgetting about our two power sports, GCM. Our WVB team, until the last couple of years, was the cream of the Sky and was our perennial reps in the NCAAs. Our gymnastics team is a regional power and has won WAC titles. That's got to count for SOMETHING.

We should not drop down to D2. Yes, the basketball gym is among the worst in the conference.

I do like how Gonzo has pushed for athletics facilities improvement but he screwed basketball to help football and track.

SuperHornet are you a jerk or just play one on message boards? Yes this is the new decade and why you would make a mountain out of a mole hill is beyond me.

The arena will get built this decade. It’s technically still on the books and if we were not in the middle of the worst economic recession since the 30’s (yes we are in the middle of it, this thing is far from over) I think there would still be headway being made.

GCM, no sports will get dropped unless a move to FBS is made. A move to FBS would make dropping a men’s sport feasible. (Mainly due to the juggling of the number of men to women scholarships.) And no, zero chance of any Sac State athletics moving down to D2. They would drop the sport before doing that.

You are new to the boards JH, you will understand SH’s melodramatic responses soon enough. (And his undying love for all things UOP.)

So true, SD. And he completely missed the fact that I agreed with his main point....

Personally I think the kids in 2nd grade right now, will see an arena by the time they enter Sac St. 2nd graders are 6-7 years old, so it will be at best 12 years before we see an arena.

Who will get a new arena first, Sac St or CSUN?

Completely disagree...

SHA: any new facts to support that Sac State's arena will get built soon?

I've got a solid 'history's on my side.'

Other than we have made more facility upgrades this past decade than Nothingridge has (in chron order): Permanent facility for the soccer programs; the renovation of Hornet Field and Shea Stadium; the Broad Center...heck, even new gym seating at Colberg Court and refurbishing of the court a couple of times and Bill Campbell's opening of Spare Time Indoor Courts so tennis can move their matches indoors in case of inclement weather and those kids can practice during the winter...

It may have not been lightspeed, but we have definitely done more than that school in the "Valley" that dropped football...

Good point SHA, plus all the other “non-athletic” facilities that have went up when Gonzo took over. I still claim the arena will get done this decade. The true indicator will be if progress is made when the economy turns around.

What we have going is that an arena is on the books. We are just trying to find funding for it. CSUN doesn't even have an arena on their books and in this economy I doubt if students was pass a referendum to get one built.

But if we don't do anything to find funding for an arena, CSUN may pass a referendum and get an arena built before we do.
