New Football Staff

Great article! There's only an OD left to hire and recruiting's well underway. Glad to hear he's recruiting linesmen. That goes with his Pistol offense, certainly. And a tailback?! Things are sure going to be different next year.

As quoted by Belichek, you build a team from the inside out, starting with the Center. His O-line provides the skill players opportunity. This mentality sure has paid off for the Grizz.

Vikings hire Seigler, another coach

http://portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=128034656019717800

Portland State is hiring two assistant football coaches to replace two who recently left to pursue other interests.

Richard Seigler, the former Oregon State linebacker who played four seasons professionally, will be the assistant defensive line coach.

“Richard paid to fly to Portland from his home in Las Vegas to help coach our camps this summer,” first-year PSU coach Nigel Burton said. “The kids responded to him. I’m happy to have a spot for him.”

After four years as a starter at OSU, Seigler, 29, spent three years in the NFL with San Francisco and Pittsburgh and two seasons with Toronto of the Canadian Football League.

Burton said final details were being worked out on the other coach, who will handle running back and recruiting coordinator duties.

“He has been a head coach for a long time, with recruiting connections in California,” Burton said. “Everything he brings to the table is huge.”

The new coaches will replace Casey Clifton (D-line) and Kevin Emberton (running backs/recruiting coordinator).

The Vikings begin training camp Aug. 8 in preparation for their season opener at Arizona State on Sept. 4.

Suiaunoa left for a position at Montana. :-(

All Montana does is hire away our assistant coaches. They are able to do this through the offer of more salary. So when are we going to decide to have equivalent sums of money?

It's official:

Burton Adds Malik Roberson To Coaching Staff

http://www.goviks.com/news/2011/3/28/FB_0328111222.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Malik Roberson has been named the new defensive line coach at Portland State and begins work this week as the Viking program prepares for spring football, starting on Apr. 4.

Second-year Head Coach Nigel Burton announced the hiring on Monday. Roberson replaces Legi Suiaunoa, who moved to a similar position at the University of Montana earlier this month.

"When the job came open, I was constantly getting phone calls from people in the business recommending people they know. When they found out we were talking to Malik they told me 'never mind (the person they were recommending), you should hire Malik.' I think that speaks pretty high of him," Burton said. "He had some of the greatest defensive lines in Big Sky history when he was at Eastern Washington. In addition, his commitment to academic excellence, having a plan for student-athletes academically and being a part of their lives when they are done with football really matched our philosophy here, so hiring him was a no-brainer."

Roberson has extensive experience working in the Big Sky Conference and most recently spent three seasons as the defensive line coach at Washington State. Roberson was the defensive line coach at Eastern Washington from 2002-07, moving over to WSU with Head Coach Paul Wulff at that time.

Roberson originally attended Washington State, playing two seasons as a linebacker and defensive lineman. He finished his career at Central Washington, earning first team All-Conference honors and was a co-captain of the 1995 NAIA Championship team.

A native of Spokane, Roberson spent three different seasons coaching at Lewis and Clark High School (1992-93, 1999). He joined the Eastern Washington staff as a student assistant in 2000, completing his degree at EWU in 2001.

During his six seasons as defensive line coach at Eastern Washington, Roberson had nine players earn All-Big Sky Conference honors. In his final year at EWU - 2007 - all four linemen earned All-Conference honors with Greg Peach being named second team All-American. The Eagles shared two Big Sky titles and made three NCAA FCS I playoff appearances during Roberson's coaching tenure in Cheney.

Roberson and his wife, Ondria, have a son, Nick, and twin daughters, Madison and Makayla.
