New OC, new offensive schemes.

Seems like Shoemaker is shaking things up offensively. Is Barriere expressing discomfort or am I reading between the lines too much?

Barriere, a dual-threat who combined for 3,063 yards and 32 touchdowns in 10 career starts last season, said Shoemaker is incorporating a pistol formation – a hybrid of the shotgun formation and a single-back offense, in which the QB is only 4 yards behind center – into the Eagles’ schemes.

“There’s a lot more run stuff (with Shoemaker), more pistol,” said Barriere, who bulked up to 212 pounds during the winter. “I’ve never really run pistol, but at the end of the day, he’s our new OC, and for us to be the best, we have to go out there and execute.”

IMO he is showing a level of maturity not always demonstrated at his age.

Didn’t Eastern run a lot of pistol sets during the Vernon Adams years?

Frankly, I wouldn’t change much from last year.

Exactly! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And to answer EOTS’s question, yes he seems to be expressing a little discomfort or maybe it’s doubt. Seems like there’s something there.

I can't claim to know enough about offensive schemes to say which one is the best choice. Lamar Jackson is running a pistol look and he is the best comparison to EB3 I can think of.

I was able to sit through some offensive install courses at a coaches clinic that was presented by Shoemaker and his new replacement at CWU. The pistol offense that CWU ran had a lot more down hill run game (think RPO style dive or tight inside zone) stuff then we have previously ran. More QB run. Lots of the same concepts as our shotgun with back to the side but seems a little less tendency driven as the back is straight behind. Not claiming to be real knowledgeable, but I would think with a spring and fall to make the changes EB3 will become more comfortable going forward. Sometimes OC's aren't comfortable when they are trying or scheming plays that are not within their normal system. It's a subtle change and I think players will adjust quickly.

Well Best didn't bring in Ian Shoemaker to adapt to some other offensive system, hopefully brought him in to run his successful offensive system and we have the talent to do just that. I'm sure he'll tweak what needs to be tweaked to utilize all our strength's and we have the manpower to do just that...let's get busy!

Think of it this way; if there’s ANY drop off in production/success in the Eagle offense, we know who to blame. Some random guy from a D2 school.

From a glass half full perspective... a local guy well known to the program that has been contender for national championship @ the D2 level.

Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't we always be evolving? Sure we could run the same offense as before but at some point well need more than just saw talent to win games.

EB3 was a sophomore that stepped in & took EWU to 13-2,(I think) maybe we should go with what works! Should Tom Brady be evolving? Idk... maybe Russell Wilson should have given Beast Mode the ball.

I’m giving away all this wisdom, you guys should make me Captain of this site. :D

Frankly, I've never been a fan of the pistol. However, when run right, I'm sure it opens up a lot of opportunities. I doubt it makes for a huge change considering we ran out of shotgun 95%+ last year (I don't have the statistic, but it always seemed like a downright shock on the few plays we came out under center).

Ultimately, with our offensive players, it seems like we're in for about a 50/50 split of running and passing. We should be able to do both successfully if we stay reasonably healthy.

Thank you for the insight EE. This should be a good change with the talent at Eastern. Looking forward to punishing defenses with a better play action game.
