Just heard that this year's Sac State Football Hall of Fame inductees will be......Ryland Wickman, Jon Osterhout, Lonie Paxton and Charles Roberts! I guess the induction ceremony will be sometime around the first of May...I think same weekend as the spring game. Not sure of details yet, but will let people know if I hear more.

This is great news, but they seem rather young. I also question the probability of Chuck making the banquet; the CFL season will be in progress.

If we're going for the young guys, I'd like to nominate Scott Towne, Garrett White, and the Williams Brothers while we're at it. Not to mention Angus McClure.

SH, I greatly respect and admire all the guys you'd like to nominate, but don't you think being in the HOF requires the highest level of achievement?

Roberts - Multiple First Team All-Big Sky and First-Team All-Americans, All time Career leader in Yards, TDs, etc.etc.etc. He had more TDs in each of two years (19 and 22), not to mention 56 career touchdown, than Garrett White had in his entire career (16).

Three-time All-American
• 6,533 career rushing yards
• 2,260 yards in 1998
• 409 yards in a game
• 13 200-yard games*
• 29 100-yard games (White had 2)
• 11-straight 100-yard games*
• 56 career touchdowns
* NCAA Div. I-AA/FCS Record

Osterhout - Multiple First Team All-Big Sky and First Team All-American senior year, signed with Washington Redskins, team captain, most inspirational and most valuable player his senior year. Charles dropped below 2,000 yards rushing the year after he was a senior.

Wickman - All-time leading Sac State career tackles record, 3rd Team All-American, 1st Team All Big Sky

Paxton - 3 Superbowl rings and the greatest long snapper in the history of Sac State and the Big Sky conference. Charles dropped below 2,000 yards rushing the year after he was a senior.

On what basis would your guys get in, other than they were starters, great guys and team players with great hearts for the Hornets. I don't see that they were at the same level as these guys during their careers. For example, none of them were First Team All-Big Sky, much less All-Americans. I think the bar for Hornets inducted in the HOF should be very high, otherwise its not really a Hall of Fame. Its the very best of the best. Just my humble opinion.

I was being facetious to some extent with Towne, though we never really got to see his full potential at his best position: QB. The same could be said of White. The Williams Brothers, I'm not so sure about. They did some great things on defense, but I never did figure out why nobody took a chance on them at the next level.

I'll tell you this, though: Towne and White both never reached their college potential because of the presence of one complete ignoramus: Bruce Pielstick. These guys were both clearly quarterbacks and really good ones. 'Stick had the nerve to absolutely ruin their careers by moving them to WR. And in White's case, the problem was compounded by a mid-career forced redshirt AND a subsequent move to RB. They never got a chance to mature at QB. I didn't like the move of Jeff Schultz to Y (though that one was a tad more personal as Schultz was a fellow Lodi High alum). I've never been a fan of moving QBs to other positions, but in the cases of Towne and White it was particularly egregious considering that they were both great talents that were never developed by a guy who couldn't handle the job given him. They could have been decent NFL QBs, but now we'll never know because of 'Stick.

Man, that idiot's a perfect example of the Peter Principle.

BTW, HD, part of the facetiousness came from the fact that those elected to the HOF are so young. I would have expected folk from AT LEAST Angus' era, if not before. In addition, a TEAM should have been elected.

Is there any word on why this HOF is strictly for football? One would think that a school sports HOF would include other athletes.

Young? Wickman has been out 10 years, Osterhout & Paxton 9 years and Charles 8 years. May I remind you that you only have to be retired 5 years from the NFL to be eligble for the HOF. You think ours should be 15-20 years? These were obviously the top guys in the 1AA era. The next guy in line would be Fred Amey IMHO.

At least Angus' era? They are already there: Troy Mills & Rod McMaster. Damien Shelton is also in and his last season was 1996.

As for good old BP, yeah, he couldn't coach QBs at all: Tony Corbin, Ricky Ray, Ryan Leadingham. His issue wasn't developing players, it was calling stupid plays in crucial situations. He was so tight in a critical game situations you couldn't shove a toothpick up his ass with a sledgehammer.

Pielstick had quite productive QBs except for one year: 1998 - Garrett White, 639 yards passing, 3 TDs and 8 Interceptions. Corbin, Ray and Leadingham under Pielstick never had less than 2,000 yards passing. The only other guy besides White was Bernhardt with 1876 yards, 8 TDs and 16 interceptions. White and Bernhard were the ONLY two that had less TDs than picks in a season.

Thank you HHD. I think the one of the biggest reasons for Volek's downfall was not letting his assistants go...especially the ones who called the same plays over and over again.

I completely agree. He was loyal to a fault. It was a damn shame.
