Next Season

Now that the season is over what do the team and coaches need to do to improve?

Obviously the team needs to hit the weight room to get bigger, stronger, faster. At this level of football there in no excuse for not working out as hard as you can, but there is always a few that don't want to do anything extra or do the workout at all and they become cancers to the team. I wouldn't even blame the player for becoming a cancer to the team, I think that is on the coaches. Speed work is a must, but when I was there the Strength coach never had us do it.

The coaches need to recruit some size. I know you can't solely recruit a player on how big they are, but we need some bigger players out there. Recruit big tight ends to become o-tackles, and tackles to become guards, or recruit linebackers to become ends and recruit ends to become d-tackles. We have a ton of young players so if they did do recruit like this they can put time in and mold these new players into their new positions. I know size is not everything but a few years back when we had Derek Johnson, and Bryce Scanlon as d-tackles no one was able to run on us. They were some pretty big players that were able to plug up the middle and stop the run.

Exactly my thoughts, I had a previous post stating that Weber has become too "cute" on defense and lack size and toughness. Good quick athletes are fine, but when a team wants to play smash mouth football you need run stoppers. It seems we play linebackers that should be safeties because we run so much man coverage, they are more cover guys than linebackers.

I agree with you on the defensive side of the ball. Eastman is going to help a lot. However, we may need more. Hopefully, someone steps up in the spring.

On offense, we need to recruit a coordinator, or at least get our guys some top notch training, somewhere. Seems to me like a lot of teams had us scouted quite well and the reverse was not always true.

Hmmm... Is Dave A. still available???

I agree that we miss the years of Scanlon, Johnson, Moleni on the D line, they were great players with great attitudes. They were seasoned players and brought a lot of leadership to the team and they are sorely missed. The 2008 team was one of my favorites, but we still have a lot of positives going into next season.

On the Defense, Eastman will be a big plus coming back. The redshirt year has allowed him to fully recover from the 2 MCL injuries he suffered in the 2009 season. He has been back since September in classes and training every day, preparing for Spring ball. Hopefully he will be able to 'motivate' some of the other D linemen to step it up both on and off the field. The off season workouts will determine the outcome of the season.

Offense needs help from a management viewpoint, too predictable. Look for Hoke to step in with a seamless transition, need to have a FB emerge in Spring ball. Hopefully, Francisco continues to progress with his rehab on his torn achilles and comes back to be a big target for Hoke.

We have a lot to look forward to for next season. Happy Holidays!
