No redshirt for Vercher

Jihad Vercher is listed as QB#2 on the depth chart and as the holder. Looks like he's going to see the field after all his Freshman year.

A couple of other things I noticed on the depth chart:

Stickney at OL #2 everywhere. Either he is that good or the OL lacks capable depth, I fear it’s the latter.

Hikutini at TE. Broadnax looked good in camp and thought he would be the guy. He will probably be in the mix in some capacity regardless. Does this mean Sander is a RS?

Totty at DE. I saw him on a crutch during camp, good to see he is healthy enough to get the start. It’s also good to see some big bodies on the interior behind Mazza and Castro.

Smith at LB. I thought Fernandez would get the nod alongside Davis given his experience. I like the idea of one of the young LBs getting the start to build for the future.
Hannum at LB #2 behind Davis. Will he be brought in for certain situations? I assume this means no RS for him.

Beale at FS. Washington seemed to get more reps during camp but Beale looked better last season. Both will probably see lots of action.
Green at CB #2. I assume this means no RS for him.

Graham at KR & PR. Graham is a playmaker so this could get him in the open field to make something happen. This also puts him at risk to take some pretty big hits and not be as fresh for the subsequent offensive series.

Burn a redshirt to be a holder? I for one am a little confused by this. One would think that there are others on the roster that could fill in holding on snaps. If Safron gets hurt, then bring the kid in, but if Safron makes it through the year playing every game and Vercher is only the holder all year, that doesn't make sense...

Don't fret, Vercher is certainly going to play. As you said, it makes zero sense to waste a year of eligibility unless they have some sort of plan for him besides placeholder. While Safron may start every game in which he's healthy, I'm sure they'll ease Vercher into games in certain packages - probably similar to how Urban Meyer utilized Tim Tebow his freshman year at Florida when Chris Leak was the starter. That'd be my guess.

Or hopefully the Hornets can put some games away by the 3rd quarter and he and some of the other young players can see the field for mop up duty.
